Tyrese Haliburton tried to recruit LeBron James to the Indiana Pacers. It went about as well as you’d expect.
Haliburton admitted in a recent interview that he reached out to James with a pitch to bring the 41-year-old legend to Indianapolis. This was before James even notified the Lakers he wouldn’t be coming back next season. Haliburton said he sent the message and waited. James replied with three laughing-crying emojis. And that was it. Haliburton said that was the end of his recruiting efforts.
Look, it was worth a shot. LeBron has spent years torching the Pacers in the playoffs. He eliminated them in three straight postseasons when he was with the Miami Heat from 2012 to 2014. Then he did it again twice more with the Cavaliers in 2017 and 2018. The man has owned Indiana basketball for over a decade. So the idea of him suddenly putting on a Pacers jersey at age 41? It’s funny. Haliburton apparently thought so too, even if the laugh was on him.
But the Pacers have bigger things to worry about. Haliburton is still recovering from the Achilles injury he suffered in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals. That was a brutal way to end a storybook season. Indiana traded for Ivica Zubac last year and sent the Clippers the No. 5 pick in the draft to get it done. That’s a lot to gamble on a center, but Zubac gives them a real presence in the middle. The Pacers are hoping he can anchor the paint while Haliburton gets back to full speed.
The team signed Kelly Oubre Jr. in free agency but otherwise had a quiet summer. They’re banking on internal growth and Haliburton’s return to push them back into the East’s top tier. The Eastern Conference is loaded. Boston is still Boston. Milwaukee has Giannis. Philadelphia is always lurking. Indiana needs its star guard healthy and its big man producing just to stay in the conversation.
LeBron isn’t walking through that door. But the Pacers’ schedule for next season drops next month. They can start planning for a reality that does not include the King. Haliburton can laugh about it now. He might as well. The recruiting pitch is a funny story. The real work starts when that Achilles is ready.
