LeBron James Has the Warriors Plotting a Backup Plan Without Anthony Davis

The idea of LeBron James in a Golden State uniform has been floating around long enough that you could call it a serious possibility now. When James let the Lakers know he wouldn’t be back next season, the NBA essentially hit pause on everything else. The King is a free agent for what might be his last stop, and the Warriors have positioned themselves as one of the top three contenders alongside Cleveland and Miami.

Golden State’s original pitch to LeBron was built around reuniting him with Anthony Davis. That made sense on paper, given their chemistry in LA. But there’s a problem. The Washington Wizards traded for Davis last year and reportedly have zero interest in flipping him before he even plays a game for them. So that path is basically closed.

So What’s Plan B?

According to a report from The Stein Line, the Warriors aren’t done yet. They’ve apparently lined up a secondary roster move or two just in case they get the green light from James that he wants to finish his career in the Bay Area. The exact details aren’t public yet, but the league is watching.

Here’s the thing about LeBron in Golden State, even without Davis. He’s still one of the best drivers and playmakers the game has ever seen. Put him next to Stephen Curry, the greatest three-point shooter in history, and the math gets ugly for the rest of the league. James would rack up assists just by kicking the ball out to Curry on the perimeter. Defenses wouldn’t know who to sell out on.

The Warriors and James had a bitter rivalry for years, remember. Three Finals matchups, two wins for Golden State, a lot of tension. But that’s old news now. The idea of Curry and James running pick-and-roll together is the kind of thing basketball fans dream about. And James has a track record of making those late-career jumps work, like when he took his talents to South Beach and then back to Cleveland.

The Cavaliers offer familiarity. The Heat offer nostalgia and a strong system. But the Warriors offer a chance to chase titles alongside a peer who’s already an all-time great. That’s a tough pitch to beat.

What happens next is anyone’s guess. James has a history of taking his time with free agency decisions, and there’s no reason to think this one will be quick. The Warriors are ready. They just need to hear one word from LeBron.
