LeBron James is about to step in front of microphones in New York this week, and the NBA rumor mill is already running at full speed.
The 22-time All-Star is scheduled to record a live episode of his podcast “Mind the Game” on Thursday alongside Tyrese Haliburton at Fanatics Fest. The next day, he’ll shoot an episode of “The Shop.” And because nothing happens around LeBron in July without people reading between the lines, the timing has set off a fresh wave of speculation about his free agency plans.
Remember 2010? That didn’t go great. James announced his move to Miami on live TV in what became known as “The Decision,” and he’s since said he’d handle it differently. So a live podcast appearance right in the middle of free agency season naturally raises eyebrows. But is he actually going to drop news this time? Nobody knows for sure.
NBA insider Marc Stein has been tracking this closely. On his Substack, Stein pointed out the obvious question: how meaningful are those live podcast slots at Fanatics Fest? He also stressed that while a lot of people are focused on Miami, Cleveland, and Philadelphia as frontrunners, the race isn’t that simple.
The Warriors aren’t backing off
Golden State has been mentioned as a suitor for months, and Stein says the Warriors haven’t relented. Especially owner Joe Lacob, who appears determined to stay in the mix until the very end. That’s notable given that Cleveland has been described as the closest thing to a frontrunner, and the Warriors are reportedly operating with genuine concern about that.
ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel added that Draymond Green made his own pitch to LeBron during their vacation together in Puerto Rico. Green is tight with James, and that’s not nothing when you’re trying to recruit a guy who’s already won four championships and is about to turn 41 years old in December.
Other teams still in the conversation, according to Stein: the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets. So the field is wider than the usual suspects.
Fanatics Fest is stacked anyway
LeBron isn’t the only big name scheduled to appear. Kevin Durant, Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Tom Brady, Aaron Judge, Serena Williams, and Novak Djokovic are all expected to make appearances. It’s a celebrity sports convention at this point, not just a LeBron press conference waiting to happen.
Maybe he announces something. Maybe he just talks hoops with Haliburton and grabs some merch. Either way, the speculation machine is already warmed up and ready to go. We’ll find out Thursday.
