According to The Athletic’s Joe Vardon, those suggestions were called “a lie.”
Perkins claimed James had his mind made up. Then suddenly, he said, James reversed course and went back to square one. That version of events doesn’t match what people around James are telling reporters. Vardon’s sources shot down the notion that James has been flip-flopping on a decision he hasn’t even announced yet.
Rich Paul, James’ longtime agent, isn’t playing games either. During an appearance on his own podcast this week, Paul said he’s told teams exactly what’s expected. Nothing more, nothing less. “We don’t need you to go above and beyond about anything,” Paul said. “All the messages have been sent.”
The whole thing has become a guessing game across NBA media. But one thing is clear: nobody close to James is letting outside speculation stand without a response.
Shams Charania Says There’s Nothing Left to Wait For
On Thursday’s Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Shams Charania offered a different read than Perkins. Charania said James has everything he needs to make a call. The teams are set. The information is in. There’s no trade behind the scenes they’re waiting on, no Anthony Davis domino that needs to fall first.
“LeBron has everything he needs to make a decision,” Charania said. “The conversations have happened. They’re not, from my understanding, my sources tell me LeBron James, his agent, Rich Paul, are not waiting for another domino right now.”
Charania framed the choice around fit and culture instead of roster gymnastics. He pointed out that if James and Paul had told the Cavs, Heat, or Warriors in early July to make a specific move, those teams probably would have done it. But that message never came. So the silence itself says something.
James Staying Quiet While Everyone Else Talks
James hasn’t said a word publicly about his plans. Last week at Fanatics FanFest in New York, Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton tried to get an answer out of him during a live recording of Mind the Game. James just smiled and didn’t bite. Later he said his motivation for a 24th season is simple: he loves competing and wants to keep inspiring younger players.
That’s the only real answer anyone has gotten. Everything else is noise, spin, or someone guessing on television. And James’ camp has made it clear they’re not afraid to call out what they see as flat-out lies.
