Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. has heard the jokes. He knows people think he looks like Bronny James. But when the comparison comes from LeBron James himself, it hits different.
It started during the first round of the NBA playoffs, when the Los Angeles Lakers eliminated the Houston Rockets. Anderson was at Game 6. After the win, LeBron spotted him and went there.
“That’s my 4th child,” James said. “Him and Bronny are twins and don’t nobody know it. Me and Savannah been trying to keep it under wraps for a long time.”
Now at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles, Anderson finally addressed the joke. He posted his reaction on X, formerly Twitter, via Sports Illustrated.
“Usually I would feel offended if another grown man called me his son,” Anderson wrote. “But I was like, ‘It’s LeBron James, so that’s G.O.A.T.ed.”
Hard to argue with that logic. When the greatest basketball player alive says you look like his kid, you just take the compliment.
The internet has been on this for a while
The resemblance between Anderson and Bronny has been a running meme on social media for months. During that Lakers-Rockets series, Anderson posted an Instagram video of him helping LeBron up off the floor. He captioned it “a freaking legend.” LeBron responded by calling Anderson “an unbelievable football player.”
Anderson is a little busy being one of the best defensive players in the NFL. He’s been with the Texans for three seasons. He won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and has made two Pro Bowls. In April, he signed a three-year, $150 million contract extension. Not bad for a guy who gets mistaken for a rookie NBA player.
Meanwhile, LeBron has declared for free agency and isn’t rushing his decision on where to play next. Bronny is about to start his third NBA season, and for the first time, his dad won’t be on the same roster. That part is pretty wild on its own.
But for one night at the ESPYs, the whole thing was just funny. Anderson put it best: if you’re gonna get called someone’s son, it might as well be LeBron’s.
