The messy exit from Ole Miss

Kiffin left Ole Miss during the 2025 season to take the LSU job. The timing was awkward. Ole Miss was headed to the College Football Playoff, and Kiffin wanted to coach the team through it. School leadership had other ideas. They moved on before the CFP and promoted Pete Golding to head coach.

The whole thing made national news. Kiffin walked away from a playoff-bound team. But he walked into a program with a different kind of pressure. LSU fired Brian Kelly midseason in 2025 after three years of underperforming. The Tigers have talent but no recent hardware. The expectations in Baton Rouge are always national title or bust.

What Kiffin brings to LSU

Kiffin has a track record of turning programs around. He made Ole Miss a legitimate SEC contender. He pulled Florida Atlantic out of oblivion. He had moments at Tennessee and USC even if those ended badly. He also spent years under Nick Saban at Alabama, which is basically a PhD in winning.

He has already started stacking recruits. The 2026 class is looking strong. LSU fans want immediate results and Kiffin seems to understand that. He is not here to rebuild over four years. He is here to win now.

The Tigers open the 2026 season against Clemson on September 5. That is a marquee matchup for a first game and a real test right out of the gate.

Kiffin also spent a brief stretch as head coach of the Oakland Raiders. That did not go great. But he has always been better in college where his personality fits the chaos.

Whether he stays off social media for the long haul is another question. The man loves a good argument with a fan. But for now, he is quiet. Knox might have done the college football world a favor.
