LaMelo Ball Trade Talks Heat Up as Hornets Listen to Offers, per Shams

The Charlotte Hornets just wrapped up the NBA Draft, and already the rumor mill is spinning hard around their franchise player. According to Shams Charania, the team is fielding multiple trade offers for point guard LaMelo Ball. And while Ball has made it clear he wants to stay in Charlotte, the organization is apparently willing to listen. Shams reported on ESPN that if the right deal comes along, the Hornets could actually pull the trigger.

This is a wild development for a few reasons. First, Ball is only 22 years old and signed to a max extension that kicks in next season. He’s the face of the franchise, the guy whose jerseys you see in the crowd, the one who brought a certain buzz back to a team that’s been mostly irrelevant since the early 2000s. But the Hornets haven’t won anything meaningful with him. They’ve made the play-in tournament twice and lost both times. Last season they finished 21-61, dead last in the Eastern Conference.

So maybe this isn’t actually that crazy. If you’re the front office and you’re looking at a roster that still has major holes — no reliable center, inconsistent wings, a coach who might be on the hot seat — trading your most valuable asset for a haul of picks and young players could be the smarter long-term bet. Especially with Victor Wembanyama lurking in San Antonio and other young cores already ahead of Charlotte in the rebuild timeline.

What a LaMelo trade could look like

It’s still early, but the whispers suggest teams like the Trail Blazers, Spurs, and even the Lakers have kicked tires. The price would be steep. Multiple first-round picks, at least one young starter, and probably salary filler to make the numbers work. Ball is set to make $35 million next season, and that number climbs each year. That’s a lot for a guy who’s missed 106 games over the last three seasons due to ankle and wrist injuries. He’s electric when he’s on the floor — averaging 23.9 points and 8.2 assists this past year — but availability matters.

The Hornets have not confirmed anything publicly, and it’s possible this is just the normal pre-draft noise that leaked late. But Shams isn’t usually the guy to float smoke without a fire. He’s one of the most plugged-in reporters in the league, so when he says Charlotte is listening, you can bet there’s at least something cooking.

For now, Ball remains a Hornet. But the next few weeks could get interesting fast. If a team shows up with an offer too good to refuse, this whole rebuild might take a sharp turn in a new direction.
