LaMelo Ball Trade Talks Are Real and the Timberwolves Are All In

The idea of Charlotte trading LaMelo Ball sounded crazy when the rumor first dropped Wednesday. But the more you look at it, the more it makes sense. And the Timberwolves? They’re not just sniffing around. They’re serious.

NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that Minnesota’s interest in Ball is, in his words, ‘undeniably serious.’ That’s strong language for a guy who usually hedges his bets. The Wolves already made a splash this week by moving Julius Randle in a three-team deal with the Nets and Bulls. So they’ve got roster flexibility and they’ve got a hole at point guard.

Why Minnesota needs a point guard

Mike Conley Jr. is the only true point guard on the roster right now. He’s 37. He’s still solid but he’s not the long-term answer. Anthony Edwards is their star but he’s at his best when he’s attacking, not running the offense every possession. Ball would give them a lead ball-handler who can push pace and create for others, which is exactly what this team lacks.

Ball averaged 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.1 assists this season. He played 72 games, which is the second-most of his career. The durability questions are real but he stayed on the floor this year and the Hornets had their best record in a decade.

The suitors list is growing

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, multiple teams are aggressively pursuing Ball. The initial list of serious suitors includes the Milwaukee Bucks, the Toronto Raptors and the Timberwolves. Milwaukee could use another playmaker next to Damian Lillard. Toronto is always hunting for talent. But Minnesota might have the most to offer in terms of trade assets and roster fit.

Charlotte hasn’t confirmed anything publicly. That’s normal. But the fact that these talks are happening at all is a big deal. The Hornets built their entire offense around Ball’s speed and vision. Trading him would mean starting over at the most important position.

More details will come out as the offseason ramps up. But for now, the Timberwolves are the team to watch in the LaMelo sweepstakes. They need a point guard. They have the pieces to make a deal work. And the interest is reportedly real. Not just casual. Serious.
