LaMelo Ball to the Timberwolves in a Deal That Reshapes Two Franchises

The Timberwolves just made a massive move. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Minnesota has acquired LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets in a trade that went down right after the 2026 NBA Draft. This one came out of nowhere.

Here’s what the full deal looks like. The Timberwolves are sending Naz Reid, a protected first-round pick in 2033, first-round pick swaps in 2028, 2029 and 2030, plus second-round picks in 2029, 2032 and 2033. Coming back to Minnesota alongside Ball is Josh Green. That’s a lot of future capital for Charlotte, but it’s also a huge bet for the Wolves.

Why Minnesota Made This Move Now

You don’t trade for a guy like LaMelo Ball unless you think you’re in a championship window. The Wolves already have Anthony Edwards, who just keeps getting better, and a roster built to compete. Adding Ball gives them another elite playmaker and a legitimate scoring threat from deep. He’s still only 24 and under contract for a few more years. The fit alongside Edwards might take some adjustment, but the upside is obvious.

What’s interesting is the timing. Doing this right after the draft suggests the Wolves had something lined up ahead of time — maybe they were waiting to see how the board fell before pulling the trigger. Or maybe this was always the plan. Either way, they’re going all-in on the present.

What Charlotte Gets in Return

The Hornets are hitting the reset button. Naz Reid is a solid rotation piece — he can stretch the floor, rebound, and play some defense. But he’s not a star. The real value for Charlotte is in all those draft picks. A 2033 unprotected first is a long way off, but it could be gold if the Wolves decline by then. The swap rights in the late 2020s give the Hornets flexibility to move up if they need to.

You have to wonder if Charlotte was always planning to move Ball or if this came together fast. The Hornets haven’t been able to build a consistent winner around him, and injuries have slowed him down in a couple seasons. This gives them a clean slate and a pile of assets.

More details are still coming in — contracts, exact protections on that 2033 pick, and whether any other players are involved. But as it stands, this is the biggest trade of the offseason so far. Minnesota is swinging for a title, and Charlotte is starting over.

We’ll have more on this as the teams confirm everything.
