Kevin Porter Jr. Stays with Bucks After Giannis Trade. Here’s Why.

Kevin Porter Jr. is sticking around in Milwaukee. The guard plans to pick up his $5.4 million player option for the 2026-27 season, a league source confirmed. That keeps him with the Bucks going forward.

The decision comes just days after the franchise traded Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat. That move basically tore down the old roster and kicked off a full rebuild. So it might seem weird that Porter would opt in rather than test free agency. But opportunity is a hell of a motivator.

With Giannis gone, the Bucks have a massive hole in scoring and playmaking. Porter is positioned to soak up heavy minutes and handle the ball in ways he hasn’t since his Houston days. In a lineup that’s no longer built around a superstar, he could see the ball in his hands constantly.

Timing also matters here. Porter had season-ending knee surgery in April. A guard coming off fewer than half a season of action would’ve struggled to find a big payday this offseason. Opting in lets him prove his health, stack up numbers, and reset his market value on his own terms.

His production last season backs the bet. Porter averaged 17.4 points, 7.4 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 steals while shooting 46.5 percent from the field. He started 36 of his 38 games despite a knee problem that surfaced in the season opener. Those are legit numbers for a 26-year-old with room to grow.

Porter landed in Milwaukee through a February 2025 trade with the Clippers. He’s also played for the Cavaliers and Rockets. So he’s bounced around, but now he’s got a chance to become a central piece in a rebuilding team instead of just a role player in the background.

His return still adds a wrinkle to a crowded backcourt. Ryan Rollins is in line for a bigger role, and the Bucks leaned into guard depth during the draft. So Porter’s exact spot in the rotation isn’t locked in. It’s an open question. But with Giannis gone and this team starting over, there’s opportunity for anyone willing to grab it.
