Kenyon Martin Thinks Heat Should Pair Giannis with Rookie Ware Instead of Bam

Kenyon Martin has never been one to sugarcoat his opinions, and his latest take on a potential Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to the Miami Heat is drawing plenty of attention. Speaking on the Gil’s Arena podcast, the former NBA forward threw cold water on the idea of pairing the Greek Freak with Bam Adebayo in the frontcourt. Instead, Martin argued that rookie Kel’el Ware would actually be a better fit alongside Giannis.

“Miami, do you do him and Bam together? I don’t know. I would like to see him and Kel’el Ware more than him and Bam,” Martin said. “I think Kel’el shoots the ball from the perimeter… He spreads the floor in that regard. The new 5 of the NBA. Giannis plays downhill. I like his athleticism. I like that defensively for them.”

The logic behind the hot take

Martin’s reasoning centers on spacing. Adebayo is a versatile defender and a capable mid-range scorer, but he’s not a consistent three-point threat. Ware, the Heat’s 2025 first-round pick, showed flashes of floor-stretching ability during Summer League and spot minutes last season. In Martin’s view, that shooting gravity would open up driving lanes for Antetokounmpo, who thrives attacking the rim in transition and half-court sets.

“It’s on Pat to do his job if that is his situation down there,” Martin added, pointing the pressure directly at Heat president Pat Riley.

Of course, this is all speculative. The Milwaukee Bucks have not indicated they are shopping Antetokounmpo, and the Miami Heat have not confirmed any serious pursuit. But rumors have swirled all season after Milwaukee’s early playoff exits and Antetokounmpo’s injury-plagued 2025-26 campaign.

Giannis’s numbers and the Bucks’ slide

Antetokounmpo appeared in just 36 games last season due to a series of nagging injuries. He still put up elite numbers: 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game on 62.4% shooting from the field. But Milwaukee stumbled to a 33-49 record, finishing 11th in the Eastern Conference — ahead of only the Bulls and Nets in the bottom tier.

Since winning the 2021 championship, the Bucks have been bounced in the first round three straight times. That lack of postseason success has fueled speculation that the organization might consider a reset, with Antetokounmpo as the centerpiece of a blockbuster deal.

Heat fans have been dreaming of a Giannis-in-Miami scenario for years. But Martin’s suggestion that Ware — not Adebayo — should be the long-term partner for Giannis adds a new twist. Would Riley really move on from a three-time All-Defensive anchor to build around an unproven rookie? Nothing is off the table with the Heat, but it would be a seismic shift for a franchise that prides itself on defensive identity.

For now, it’s all conversation. The draft is weeks away, and the rumor mill is only growing louder.
