Kendrick Perkins Says Darryn Peterson’s Ceiling Is Kobe Bryant. That’s a Lot.

Kendrick Perkins isn’t exactly known for subtle takes. But this one? It’s getting people’s attention.

With the 2026 NBA Draft less than 24 hours away, the ESPN analyst went on the Road Trippin’ podcast and dropped a comparison that will follow former Kansas guard Darryn Peterson for his entire career. Perkins said Peterson’s floor is Bradley Beal. His ceiling, in terms of pure talent, is Kobe Bryant.

“I say that respectfully,” Perkins said. “I’m not saying he’s going to have a Kobe Bryant-type career. I’m talking about the talent level there. It’s nothing that this man can’t do. You is not stopping this young man from getting any shot. He gets any shot, he gets to any spot he wants to.”

Peterson has been in the mix for the No. 1 pick all week. The Washington Wizards hold the top spot. Most mock drafts have AJ Dybantsa of BYU going first overall. In Brett Siegel’s latest mock for ClutchPoints, Peterson slots in at No. 2 to the Utah Jazz. But the buzz around Peterson is real, and Perkins just cranked up the volume.

John Wall Agreed With Him

John Wall was also on the podcast panel. He didn’t push back. If anything, he said the scouting community has been saying the same thing for months.

“Perk, you ain’t the only one saying that though,” Wall said. “Everybody say that’s his ceiling, and everybody say this his floor. Ain’t nobody denying it. Like you said, only thing people wanna know is what the hell your camp was doing to not let you be out there exposing what you really could do. He know it. Look at the games when you play AJ.”

Wall’s point was interesting. Peterson dealt with injuries during his college season at Kansas. There were stretches where he was out or limited. People who watched him at Incess — where he developed a reputation as a three-level scorer — say the kid can really play. But the sample size at the college level wasn’t as clean as scouts wanted.

The Kobe Comparison Is Everything and Nothing

Comparing any young guard to Kobe Bryant is almost unfair. It’s the kind of ceiling talk that can warp expectations for a decade. But Perkins wasn’t comparing careers or rings or mentality. He was talking about the bag. The skill package. The ability to get buckets from anywhere on the floor.

That part, at least, Peterson has shown in flashes. At 6-foot-5 with a smooth handle and a jumper that works from deep, mid-range and at the rim, he fits the modern scoring guard prototype. The question is whether he can stay healthy and do it consistently against NBA defenders.

For now, the draft board is still fluid. Washington hasn’t tipped its hand publicly. But if Perkins is right about the talent, somebody is getting a potential star at No. 2 or wherever Peterson lands. And the Kobe comparison is going to follow him until he proves it or doesn’t.
