Los Angeles Clippers fans saw their stomachs drop Friday night. During a Summer League game against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Las Vegas, rookie guard Keaton Wagler took a nasty spill while running the offense. He landed awkwardly on his right leg, grabbing at his knee area as the crowd went quiet.

Medical staff rushed over. For a team that just drafted the 19-year-old with the No. 5 pick and handed him the keys to a new backcourt, watching him wince on the court was about the worst possible scene.

But here’s the thing. Wagler got up. He walked to the locker room tunnel under his own power, according to Brett Siegel’s report on X. After a short check, he came right back into the game. Crisis averted.

A scare that could have changed everything

The Clippers are banking on Wagler to be a major piece of their rebuild. The former Illinois standout was a consensus second-team All-American in college, known for his deep shooting range and ability to create off the dribble. In three Summer League games before Friday, he showed flashes of exactly that. He dropped 7 points in a quiet debut against Sacramento, then exploded for 23 points and 4 assists against Utah. He followed that up with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists against the Lakers.

So yeah, losing him to a leg injury in a Summer League game would have been brutal. The Clippers already retooled the roster heavily, and they need Wagler to slot into the backcourt rotation alongside Darius Garland for the 2026-27 season. His playmaking and scoring from all three levels is supposed to be the foundation of their offense going forward.

Summer League is mostly about evaluating young guys and praying nobody gets hurt. The Clippers got lucky here. Wagler walking back out there calmed a lot of nerves, but it also raised a question: should he even be playing in these games at all? Some teams hold their top picks out entirely to avoid exactly this kind of scare. The Clippers let him play, and it nearly backfired.

For now, they dodged a bullet. Training camp is still weeks away, but the team can move forward knowing their rising star is healthy and ready to go. That’s the only takeaway that matters tonight.
