Karl Darlow Turns Down Leeds United’s Offer. He’ll Be a Backup at Manchester United Instead.

Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow is leaving Elland Road. The 35-year-old turned down a new contract from the club and has agreed to join Manchester United as a backup option, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Darlow’s decision came down to one clear factor. Leeds offered him an extension but didn’t guarantee him the starting job. At Old Trafford, he’ll be competing for the No. 2 spot behind the first-choice keeper. It’s a lateral move in terms of playing time, but a step up in club prestige.

What Darlow Brought to Leeds

Darlow joined Leeds ahead of the 2023/24 season under Daniel Farke. His debut came in a League Cup win over Shrewsbury Town. But he really made his mark during the 2024/25 Championship run. He started the final seven games as Leeds locked up the title at Plymouth Argyle. That campaign also earned him his first Wales cap. He now has 15 international appearances.

Back in the Premier League last season he played 22 times. The highlight was April’s Save of the Month award for a point-blank stop against Wolves’ Ladislav Krejci. Solid work. Nothing flashy.

The Goalkeeper Situation at Leeds Now

Leeds always knew they’d need another keeper this summer. Illan Meslier is gone — he’s at Arsenal now. With Darlow out the door, the depth chart is suddenly thin. Right now Farke has Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns as his only senior options. That’s not ideal for a team that just fought to stay in the Premier League.

There are rumors linking Perri to Torino. And Leeds has shown interest in James Trafford and Zion Suzuki. So expect movement soon. They can’t go into the season with just two keepers, one of whom might leave.

The club praised Darlow’s professionalism and community work in their announcement. He leaves with 38 appearances total. He was part of the 2024/25 Championship title and helped keep Leeds up last season. That’s a decent legacy for a guy who was never really the undisputed No. 1.

As for Manchester United, they get a veteran presence who knows the league well. Darlow isn’t going to challenge for starts unless something goes wrong. But he’s reliable. And for a backup, that’s usually enough.
