Justin Jefferson is used to being overlooked. That theme has followed him since college, through the draft and now into his prime NFL years. So when ESPN ranked him second among wide receivers behind Ja’Marr Chase, his reaction was pretty much what you’d expect from a guy who’s been counted out his whole life.
Analyst Kevin Clark put the question to Jefferson directly: does the ranking make him angry or does it make him laugh?
“A little mixture of both,” Jefferson said. “It makes me laugh and it also makes me a little bit angry. But that’s kind of been my whole entire career. That’s been my whole entire life. Not really people giving me the satisfaction or credit I should. But it is what it is, that’s what makes me grind a little bit harder.”
A down year changes the narrative
Let’s be real for a second. Jefferson’s 2025 season was the worst of his career. He started all 17 games and still only put up 84 catches, 1,048 yards and two touchdowns. For most receivers that’s a solid year. For Jefferson, who came in averaging over 1,400 yards per season, it’s a steep drop.
The obvious factor here is the quarterback situation. Minnesota’s QB play was brutal last season. It held Jefferson back in ways we haven’t seen since his rookie year. When your quarterback can’t get you the ball downfield, your numbers are going to suffer no matter how good you are.
Jefferson gets that. He’s not making excuses. He owns the perception shift.
“But obviously going off of last year and seeing the years that I’ve had, it’s normal for people to kind of put me below where they’ve had me before,” he added. “It’s just all about proving to everybody again, like I’ve already done multiple times, there’s nothing really new to the goals or accomplishments. Just continue to do what I do best, is going out there, catching the ball, and hopefully get into the end zone a lot more this year.”
What drives him now
The Vikings haven’t won a playoff game with Jefferson. That’s the elephant in the room. He’s one of the best at his position but Minnesota hasn’t been able to get over the hump. And he knows the only way to shut down the debate is to win when it matters.
Training camp opens August 1st with the first full-team practice. Jefferson will be there with something to prove. Again. The guy has spent his entire career turning disrespect into fuel. Doesn’t matter if it’s draft analysts, ranking lists or opposing defensive backs. He keeps receipts.
The rankings don’t decide anything. The games do. And Jefferson plans to remind everyone of that this fall.
