Manchester United’s search for a Casemiro replacement just hit a wall. And the guy holding the sledgehammer is Jose Mourinho.
The new Real Madrid manager told Aurelien Tchouameni he’s not going anywhere. According to reports from TEAMtalk, Mourinho informed both the club and the player that the 26-year-old French international is central to his project at the Bernabeu. So much for United’s hopes of prying him away.
Tchouameni has always been the dream signing for INEOS. He fits the profile perfectly: young enough to build around, experienced at the highest level, and already familiar with the Premier League from his Monaco days. But the asking price and wage demands were always going to be steep. Chelsea lurking in the background didn’t help either.
United had kept in touch with Tchouameni’s representatives all summer, waiting for any sign that Real Madrid might be open to a sale. That window is now shut. Mourinho made it clear he wants to build around the midfielder and give him the consistent starting role he’s been chasing at Madrid.
This isn’t just a backup plan falling through. It’s the third or fourth option imploding. United already got priced out of moves for Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes. Alex Scott might be out of reach too. The list of realistic targets is shrinking fast.
What’s left on the board
INEOS has started looking outside the Premier League, which is where Tchouameni came onto the radar. But now that’s dead, they’re back to scrambling. Names like Ayyoub Bouaddi and Johan Manzambi are floating around. So are some Premier League-proven guys: Tyler Adams, Sander Berge, and Andrey Santos.
None of those move the needle like Tchouameni would. Adams is solid but injury-prone. Berge is reliable but not a game-changer. Santos is young and promising but unproven at United’s level. Bouaddi and Manzambi are basically scouting reports at this point, not finished products.
Fans are getting restless. INEOS has been deliberate in the market, which sounds nice in theory but looks like indecision when the calendar flips to July and your top targets keep slipping away. United’s co-owners need to accelerate things soon, or they’ll be left holding a bag of consolation prizes.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, moves on without drama. Mourinho gets his guy. Tchouameni gets his chance. And United gets another reminder that patience in a transfer window only works if you’re willing to lose.
