Jose Mourinho Could Hijack Manchester United’s Mateus Fernandes Deal — Here’s What’s at Stake

The summer transfer window hasn’t even reached its peak, and already the Mateus Fernandes saga is shaping up to be one of the most chaotic storylines in European football. Manchester United appeared to have a clear run at the West Ham midfielder, but Jose Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid has thrown a serious wrench into those plans.

According to multiple reports, United are preparing to make their first formal bid for the 21-year-old Portuguese star, who is one of Michael Carrick’s top priorities as he reshapes the Red Devils’ midfield. Fernandes impressed during a breakout season at the London Stadium, but West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League has created a cloud of uncertainty around his future.

The Price Tag Problem

West Ham are holding firm at an £80 million asking price, a figure that United have so far been unwilling to match. The Hammers are banking on a bidding war, but their demotion to the Championship may force them to lower expectations. The Guardian reports that United believe the price will drop as the window progresses, though they are wary of waiting too long.

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have also registered interest, but the most significant threat comes from Madrid. Mourinho, freshly appointed as Los Blancos’ manager, is reportedly a big fan of his compatriot and has urged the Spanish giants to go all in for Fernandes.

Mourinho’s Revenge Tour?

The timing is almost too perfect for drama. Mourinho, who was sacked by United in 2018, now has the chance to swipe a top target from under their noses. With super agent Jorge Mendes representing Fernandes, the possibility of a late hijack cannot be dismissed. Mendes has a long history of pulling off surprise moves, and his relationship with Mourinho adds another layer of intrigue.

United have already been burned in recent windows — most notably missing out on Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali after believing deals were close. INEOS, the club’s ownership group, will be desperate to avoid a repeat performance.

What Fernandes Brings

Fernandes is a box-to-box midfielder with excellent vision, composure on the ball, and a knack for arriving late in the box. At 21, he fits the profile of the young, energetic talent Carrick is trying to build around. United have already secured Ederson from Atalanta on Casemiro’s recommendation, but Carrick wants at least two more midfield additions before the summer is out.

The club has not confirmed any official bid for Fernandes, but sources close to the negotiations suggest talks with his representatives have been productive. Still, until pen hits paper, nothing is certain — especially with Mourinho lurking in the wings.
