The Tampa Bay Lightning just added a veteran blue-liner with serious playoff credentials. John Carlson signed a two-year contract worth $17 million on Wednesday, averaging $8.5 million per season. The move came after Carlson hit unrestricted free agency when talks broke down with the Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina had picked up his signing rights from the Anaheim Ducks back on June 27, sending defense prospect Kyle Masters and a 2026 sixth-round pick the other way.
Carlson is 36 years old. But if last season proved anything, it’s that he’s not slowing down yet. Splitting time between the Washington Capitals and the Ducks, he racked up 14 goals and 46 assists for 60 points in 71 regular-season games while averaging more than 23 minutes of ice time a night. After the Ducks grabbed him at the trade deadline, he posted four goals and 10 assists in just 16 games and led Anaheim in average ice time down the stretch. That helped the Ducks make the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
In the postseason, Carlson kept rolling. He collected six assists in 12 playoff games while logging over 24 minutes per contest. Paired with 22-year-old Pavel Mintyukov for most of the run, he helped Anaheim win its first playoff series since 2017 before the Vegas Golden Knights bounced them in the second round.
What Carlson Brings to Tampa Bay
This isn’t some rental signing. Carlson is coming off an eight-year, $64 million deal that carried an $8 million cap hit. The Capitals drafted him 27th overall in 2008, and he spent more than 16 seasons in Washington before the trade to Anaheim. Altogether, he’s played 1,159 NHL regular-season games, scoring 170 goals and 615 assists for 785 points. That ranks fifth among active NHL defensemen in career points.
He’s also played 149 career playoff games, with 21 goals and 63 assists for 84 points. And he was a central piece of Washington’s first Stanley Cup win in 2018, putting up five goals and 20 points in 24 playoff games that spring. Carlson also leaves Washington as the franchise’s all-time leading scorer among defensemen — 166 goals, 605 assists, 771 points — and ranks second only to Alex Ovechkin in games played for the Caps. He was a Norris Trophy finalist in 2020 after leading all NHL defensemen with 60 assists and 75 points.
Internationally, the Natick, Massachusetts native represented the U.S. at the 2014 Olympics and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. He also scored the championship-winning goal for Team USA at the 2010 World Juniors.
The Lightning brought him in after losing Darren Raddysh, so Carlson slots right into the top four on the blue line as Tampa Bay gears up for the 2026-27 season. He’s still got the shot, the vision and the mileage to make a difference. Now he just has to prove it in a new uniform.
