Jerry Jones watched the Los Angeles Rams trade draft picks like monopoly money and win a Super Bowl doing it. And somewhere in the back of his mind, he started second-guessing his own playbook.
As the Dallas Cowboys open training camp for the 2026 season, Jones admitted this week that the Rams’ aggressive roster-building philosophy has made him question whether he’s been trying to have it both ways — and ending up with neither.
“One thing Jerry Jones liked about how the Rams have operated: They will put tomorrow out there for today. And that’s worked for them,” the Cowboys owner said, via Joseph Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News. “Sometimes, I may be trying to get a little of both in: a little for today and save some for tomorrow, and you end up a little milquetoast.”
That’s not the kind of self-reflection you normally hear from a guy who’s been running the same franchise for three decades. But missing the playoffs in 2025 will do that to a person.
The Rams blueprint works. Dallas knows it.
Los Angeles hasn’t exactly been shy about its strategy. Trade a first-rounder for Von Miller. Another one for Matthew Stafford. Ship off future picks to bring in guys like Jalen Ramsey and Odell Beckham Jr. The results speak for themselves: a Super Bowl ring and a roster that still looks dangerous heading into 2026.
The Cowboys, meanwhile, have made moves this offseason. They added a few pieces. They didn’t empty the cupboard. And they’re sitting here hoping that blend of today and tomorrow finally clicks.
Jones also admitted the stakes feel higher than usual this summer.
“Does Jerry Jones feel personal pressure going into this year? Yes. Yes I do for all the obvious reasons,” he told ESPN’s Todd Archer. “We’ve got certain things in place here that might not stay in place.”
He didn’t spell out exactly what that means. But it’s not hard to read between the lines when you’ve got a head coach and quarterback both playing on borrowed time as far as public patience goes.
The line between calculated risk and playing it safe
Nobody’s asking Jerry to mortgage the entire future on a single season. But the Rams proved you can go all the way by pushing your chips to the middle of the table. Dallas has been trying to keep one foot in each camp, and Jones wonders aloud whether that approach leaves you with nothing but a middle-of-the-road roster and endless excuses.
Training camp just started. The 2026 season hasn’t been decided yet. But the owner of America’s Team is already asking himself the hard questions out loud. That’s either a good sign or a warning shot.
