Jaylen Brown to Milwaukee? The Bucks Might Keep Him, Even If He Doesn’t Want to Stay

Jaylen Brown to Milwaukee? The Bucks Might Keep Him, Even If He Doesn’t Want to Stay

The Milwaukee Bucks are at a crossroads with Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the rumor mill is spinning hard. For months, the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat have been the two teams most linked to a potential trade for the two-time MVP. Conventional wisdom has it that if Boston lands Giannis, Jaylen Brown would be the centerpiece going back to Milwaukee. But here’s where it gets tricky: the Bucks might actually keep Brown, even though he reportedly has no interest in playing there.

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype dropped a fascinating nugget this week. While many league executives assume Milwaukee would immediately flip Brown to another team for a haul of future first-round picks, that’s not a done deal. According to Scotto, the Bucks are genuinely considering holding onto Brown if he ends up in Milwaukee as part of a Giannis trade. It’s a scenario that feels counterintuitive given the team’s likely rebuilding trajectory, but the front office is keeping its options open.

Here’s the complication. ESPN’s Marc Spears has said publicly that Brown wouldn’t want to play for Milwaukee. That’s not exactly a shock — small markets don’t always appeal to star players, especially one with Brown’s profile. But the Bucks have leverage: Brown is locked into a supermax contract worth $183 million over the next three seasons. He doesn’t have a no-trade clause, so Milwaukee could force the issue if they wanted to. Awkward? Sure. But not impossible.

Longtime Bucks reporter Gery Woelfel added more context, noting that Boston has been more willing to discuss Brown in trade talks than previously thought. But the Celtics would likely prefer sending him to a third team rather than directly to Milwaukee. That third-team scenario opens up a lot of possibilities. The Los Angeles Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers are two names that keep coming up as potential landing spots for Brown. If the Bucks go that route, they’d probably get younger players and more draft assets in return, which fits a rebuild better than keeping a max-contract star who doesn’t want to be there.

Through all of this speculation, the Miami Heat still look like the frontrunner for Giannis. Pat Riley has the assets and the track record of making blockbuster deals. But the Celtics remain a threat, and Brown’s future is the key variable. If Boston lands Giannis, Brown becomes the most interesting domino in the league — and whether he ends up in Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Portland, or somewhere else entirely is going to shape the NBA’s landscape for years.

One thing is clear right now: nobody really knows where this is heading. And that’s what makes it fun.
