Jalen Duren Could Be the Lakers’ Best Option After LeBron James Leaves

The LeBron James era in Los Angeles is officially over. Shams Charania of ESPN reported Monday that the superstar will not return to the Lakers in free agency, ending an eight-year run that brought one title and a whole lot of drama. Free agency opens Tuesday evening, and the Lakers now have a clearer picture of what they need to do.

That picture includes a serious frontcourt upgrade. Last season’s center rotation was messy. Deandre Ayton looked like a reliable starter at times but too often lost focus. For a team built around Luka Doncic, a center needs to do specific things: set hard screens, finish lobs, rebound with purpose, protect the rim. Ayton did some of that, not enough of it consistently.

Enter Jalen Duren.

Why Duren Fits

The Detroit Pistons big man is set to hit restricted free agency, and there’s been chatter about a possible disconnect between him and the team on a new deal. Some reports have floated a sign-and-trade as a realistic outcome. The Lakers should be making calls.

Duren put together an All-Star season for a Pistons team that grabbed the No. 1 seed in the East. He anchored their defense around the basket, crushed the offensive glass, finished lobs with authority, and even showed some post moves. He looked like a center built for the modern game.

The playoffs were a different story. He got outplayed by Wendell Carter Jr. and then Jarrett Allen in back-to-back series. His value on the open market might take a hit because of that. But that’s exactly the kind of discount the Lakers should be looking for.

The Doncic Factor

Duren brings the tools a Doncic-led offense needs. Elite hands. Real strength. Solid rim protection. Think Daniel Gafford during Dallas’s run to the Finals in 2024. That’s the blueprint. Duren has more offensive upside than Gafford, too.

Ayton picked up his player option for next season, so he’ll be back. But Duren and Ayton could split minutes, or the Lakers could move Ayton later. Either way, adding Duren makes the frontcourt younger and more dynamic.

Money is less of an issue now with James off the books. The Lakers have cap space and a reason to use it. Duren won’t come cheap, but restricted free agency means Detroit can match any offer. A sign-and-trade might be the cleanest path.

If the Lakers are serious about building around Doncic and trying to compete next season, Duren is the kind of move that makes sense. His playoff struggles are a concern, sure. But the regular season version of Duren is exactly what this roster needs. They shouldn’t let one bad postseason stop them from swinging.
