Jalen Brunson Shuts Down LeBron James Recruiting Talk With One Simple Answer

Jalen Brunson has better things to do than play general manager. Like putting the ball in the hoop and playing a little defense, as he put it.

The Knicks star was asked at Fanatics Fest in New York whether he’s tried to recruit LeBron James to join the defending champions. His answer was direct and refreshingly honest.

“My job is to put the ball in the hoop. Try and play a little defense. There’s people who are above me who determine who’s on the team and who’s not. I’ll leave the pitching to them,” Brunson said, as reported by NBA Courtside.

That’s it. No sales pitch. No campaigning. Just a guy who knows where his paycheck comes from and what’s actually in his job description.

Brunson has been making the rounds in New York City lately, including showing up to a Yankees-Dodgers game wearing a hat that read “Knicks in 5.” That’s the confidence of someone who just won Finals MVP after leading New York to its first championship in over 50 years. They beat the Spurs to do it.

LeBron’s Free Agency Isn’t Pointing Toward New York

Meanwhile, LeBron James is looking for a new team this offseason. And despite the Knicks being one of the league’s most storied franchises, New York isn’t considered a serious contender for his services right now.

According to reports, the likely landing spots include Miami, Cleveland, Golden State, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Denver, and maybe a few others. Two of those teams — the 76ers and Cavaliers — just got knocked out of the playoffs by the Knicks. You’d think beating a guy in the playoffs might not be the best recruiting pitch, but the NBA is weird like that.

There’s no indication Brunson has made any kind of push behind the scenes either. Based on his public comments, he’s comfortable leaving roster construction to the front office. That’s probably wise. Most stars who try to play GM end up looking foolish when the chemistry implodes.

Wherever James ends up, it’s looking less and less like it’ll be Madison Square Garden. But Brunson seems fine with that. He’s already got the ring, the Finals MVP, and a hat that says they’d win in five. What else does he need to prove?
