Jalen Brunson Left $100M on the Table. Charles Barkley Says It Made Him NBA History.

Charles Barkley doesn’t hand out praise lightly. But after Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to an NBA championship, the Hall of Famer went all in.

“I want to give him some credit,” Barkley declared on a recent broadcast. “I want to give, you know, obviously what you said about Brunson, I said, it’s the greatest free agent signing in NBA history.”

The moment wasn’t a hot take. It was the culmination of a story that started three years ago, when Brunson—a second-round pick out of Villanova—became a free agent after four seasons with the Dallas Mavericks. He could have cashed in with any number of teams. Instead, he chose the Knicks at a steep discount, taking roughly $100 million less than his max deal so the front office could surround him with talent.

A Bet on Winning, Not Just a Paycheck

In summer 2022, Brunson signed a four-year, $104 million contract with New York. At the time, some questioned the decision. The Knicks hadn’t won a playoff series in a decade. But Brunson saw the bigger picture. He wanted cap flexibility for the team to build a contender. That decision—unforgivingly criticized by some analysts—is now being celebrated as a masterstroke.

“He took so much criticism when he took a hundred million dollars less so they could go out and get other players,” Barkley added. “He deserved like, hey, listen, a hundred million dollars is a lot of money, but he wanted them to go out and get him some help, and they went on and got him some help and they are the World Champs.”

From Underdog to Captain

Brunson’s path is rare in modern sports. He was never supposed to be a franchise player—let alone an NBA Finals MVP. Yet this spring, he averaged 28 points and 8 assists in the postseason, steadying a Knicks team that leaned on his leadership in every crucial moment. His four-year, $156.5 million extension, signed last offseason, now looks like a bargain.

Barkley didn’t stop at Brunson’s individual sacrifice. He framed the signing as a turning point in NBA history. And it’s hard to argue. For a free agent of Brunson’s caliber to take less for the sake of team construction—and then actually win a title—is almost unheard of in a league dominated by max contracts and supermax demands.

The Knicks didn’t just win a championship. They validated a philosophy of team-first construction that many franchises talk about but rarely execute. Brunson could have taken the money and gone to a lottery team. Instead, he chose the harder road—and it paid off in a banner.

This is a developing story.
