Ja Morant is telling people a package arrived at his childhood home four days before the trade went down. On the back of the envelope, two words: “Trail Blazer.” And then the Memphis Grizzlies sent him to Portland.
That story comes from Jason Quick of The Athletic, who was in Columbia, South Carolina, when Morant sat down with new Blazers head coach Micah Nori. According to Quick, Morant pulled out the envelope during dinner and pointed to it. “You know,” he told Nori, “some things just happen for a reason.”
Was It a Sign or Just a Coincidence?
It sounds like the kind of thing a guy says when he wants to believe the universe is on his side. And maybe that’s fine. Morant needs that right now. The last two years have been brutal. He went from Rookie of the Year to Most Improved Player to two-time All-Star. Then came the 25-game suspension for off-court behavior, followed by a shoulder injury that ended his 2023-24 season after just nine games.
Now he’s 27, entering his eighth NBA season, and starting over in Portland. The Blazers are betting that a change of scenery — and a coach who isn’t afraid to hold guys accountable — can bring back the version of Morant who looked like a future face of the league.
The package story is a nice detail. But it’s also worth remembering that Portland gave up a lot to make this happen. The Grizzlies got Anfernee Simons, a future first-round pick, and salary filler. That’s not nothing. Memphis basically said: we’ll take the rebuild over the headache.
What Happens Next in Portland
Morant isn’t a kid anymore. He’s a seven-year vet with baggage and a repaired shoulder. The Blazers have a young core — Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, Donovan Clingan — that could use a veteran point guard who can actually score. But they also need Morant to stay on the court and out of trouble. That’s not guaranteed.
Damian Lillard is gone, obviously. So there’s no mentor waiting in the locker room. Morant will be the star from day one, for better or worse. And if the envelope story is any indication, he’s treating this like fate.
Maybe it is. Or maybe it’s just a guy looking for meaning in a business that doesn’t care about signs. Either way, the Blazers have a real chance to be interesting again.
