Ivory Coast Star Elye Wahi Arrested in French Betting Probe Days Before World Cup

Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi is staring down a potential scandal just as the World Cup heats up. The 23-year-old striker was arrested by French police on May 29 as part of an investigation into alleged betting-related offenses, less than two weeks before the tournament kicked off.

Wahi has not been charged with any crime, and French prosecutors confirmed he was released after questioning. He remains available for his national team while the investigation continues. According to reports, the probe centers on suspicions that Wahi deliberately received a yellow card during a Ligue 1 match between Nice and Metz on May 17.

The yellow card itself came in the first half, after Wahi fouled Metz defender Sadibou Sane. That caution triggered a suspension for Nice’s relegation play-off first leg — and, authorities say, an unusual spike in betting activity tied to the player being booked. French prosecutors have confirmed the investigation involves allegations of organized fraud, sports corruption, money laundering, and handling the proceeds of crime.

The practice of manipulating specific in-game events — like a yellow card — for betting purposes is known as spot-fixing, and it has become a growing concern for European leagues. In this case, the investigation was reportedly launched after betting alerts flagged suspicious patterns around the match.

A key player with a winding path

Wahi came through the youth ranks at Montpellier before moving to Lens, then Marseille, and later Eintracht Frankfurt. After struggling to find consistent scoring form in Germany, he joined Nice on loan in January and helped the club secure their Ligue 1 status. He missed the first leg of the relegation play-off due to suspension from that yellow card, but returned for the decisive second leg against Saint-Etienne and scored twice in a 4-1 victory, earning man of the match honors.

Born in France, Wahi represented the country at youth level before switching his international allegiance to Ivory Coast earlier this year. He played in Ivory Coast’s opening World Cup match against Ecuador and is expected to stay with the squad unless new developments emerge.

What happens next

For now, the legal process remains in the investigation stage. No charges have been filed, and no disciplinary action has been announced by FIFA. Wahi remains eligible to play while authorities determine whether any wrongdoing took place. The player has not publicly commented on the allegations.

The case adds an uncomfortable layer of scrutiny to a player who had been carving out a rising career across Europe. If the investigation moves toward charges, the fallout could reach far beyond the pitch — affecting Wahi’s club future, his international role, and the broader conversation around integrity in soccer.
