Steelers’ QB Search Goes Beyond Rodgers — and the Fallout Might Be Worse

The Pittsburgh Steelers might be entering the 2026 season with Aaron Rodgers under center, but don’t let the Hall of Fame name fool you. According to league insiders, the franchise’s handling of the quarterback position has reached a level of dysfunction that has rival front offices buzzing — and not in a good way.

A Pattern of Disrespect — or Just Poor Planning?

ESPN insider Dan Graziano didn’t hold back when assessing Pittsburgh’s approach, telling sources close to the situation that the Steelers have allegedly treated the QB spot like an afterthought for years. “There isn’t a playoff-caliber team that has taken the quarterback position less seriously than the Steelers have over the past three seasons,” Graziano reportedly wrote. “It’s almost like the Kenny Pickett first-round disaster broke their spirit, and they just gave up on finding a real answer.”

The numbers support the narrative. Since Pickett flamed out, the Steelers have cycled through stopgaps, veterans, and unproven backups — all while refusing to commit to a long-term plan. And while Rodgers did lead them to the playoffs in 2025, the result was a brutal blowout loss to the Houston Texans, a game that sources say exposed deep flaws in the team’s offensive philosophy.

Coaching Shuffle Raises More Questions

Now, with Mike Tomlin stepping down and Mike McCarthy taking the reins, many around the league are reportedly questioning whether Pittsburgh has any real direction. “In comes Mike McCarthy to replace him, and the Steelers are going in this time with a 42-year-old Rodgers who’s coming off the most meh season in the history of meh,” Graziano wrote, according to league insiders.

One former executive who spoke on condition of anonymity told us: “It feels like they’re putting a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. Rodgers is a legend, but at 42, coming off an average year, with a new coach and zero succession plan? That’s not how you build a contender.”

Roster Upgrades, Same Old Ceiling?

Despite some offseason moves that have strengthened the overall roster, the front office’s refusal to explore alternatives beyond Rodgers has left observers skeptical. “The overall roster looks better than it did a year ago,” Graziano reportedly added, “but the coaching change and the refusal to look anywhere else but Rodgers for a QB solution make Pittsburgh feel like a franchise whose ceiling is well established at this point.”

What’s more, behind Rodgers sits a depth chart that raises even more eyebrows. The Steelers currently carry Will Howard and rookie Drew Allar — both young and raw — plus veteran Mason Rudolph, who has already proven he’s not a long-term fix. One team insider allegedly admitted the organization is “terrified” of what happens if Rodgers misses time.

The Verdict: 2026 Could Be Make-or-Break

As training camp approaches, the pressure is mounting on McCarthy and the front office to prove the doubters wrong. But with a 42-year-old quarterback, a first-time Steelers head coach, and a backup plan that looks thin at best, the margin for error is razor-thin. Fans and analysts alike are watching closely — and many are already predicting another season of high expectations followed by playoff disappointment. Whether Rodgers can defy Father Time and elevate a franchise that, by all accounts, has lost its way remains the biggest question mark of the 2026 season.
