A.J. Brown Had 4 Dream Teams Before the Patriots Trade — Here’s Why Only One Remained

When the New England Patriots pulled off the blockbuster trade for A.J. Brown, the NFL world stood still. But according to sources close to the situation, the superstar wide receiver wasn’t just sitting around waiting to be shipped to Foxborough. Behind the scenes, Brown’s camp reportedly handed the Eagles a tightly guarded wish list — and it included four AFC powerhouses that could have changed the entire landscape of the league.

Sporting News’ Albert Breer dropped the bombshell this week, revealing that Brown’s representatives gave Philadelphia a shortlist of teams where the wideout would be willing to land. The list? The Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs — and yes, the Patriots. Three of those franchises, however, never pulled the trigger, leaving New England as the last man standing.

“Brown’s camp gave the Eagles four AFC teams they’d be happy to land with: the Bills, Chargers, Chiefs and Patriots,” Breer wrote. “The Bills traded for D.J. Moore soon thereafter, taking themselves off the market, while the Chiefs and Chargers didn’t show much interest in a deal, leaving the Patriots, who hadn’t put a first-round pick on the table yet much less a first-rounder and another high pick.”

Insiders say Brown’s focus was crystal clear: he wanted to join a contender. And with all four teams in the AFC, it’s obvious he wasn’t interested in crossing conferences. But the dominoes fell fast. Buffalo moved on by acquiring Moore, and both Kansas City and Los Angeles reportedly balked at the asking price — leaving New England’s front office scrambling to swoop in.

For Chiefs fans, the sting lingers. Kansas City is preparing for Patrick Mahomes’ return, and while Travis Kelce remains the safety blanket, the wide receiver corps is largely unchanged. Rashee Rice’s legal situation casts a dark cloud over the room, and the Chiefs’ failure to even engage seriously on Brown has some observers baffled. “They had a chance to add a true No. 1 opposite Kelce,” one league insider told us. “The fact they didn’t even try is stunning.”

Meanwhile, the Chargers used a fourth-round pick on speedster Brenen Thompson, but with their wideout group looking eerily similar to last season’s, adding Brown would have been a game-changer. “He would have been Justin Herbert’s best weapon by a mile,” an anonymous AFC executive said. “That offense would have been frightening.”

But fantasy scenarios are all that remain for Buffalo, KC, and L.A. Brown is now the cornerstone of New England’s passing attack — a premier target for young quarterback Drake Maye. And in a twist of fate, he ultimately got exactly what he reportedly wanted: a landing spot with a franchise that believes in him. The rest of the AFC can only wonder what might have been.
