Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Miami Heat. That is a reality Boston Celtics fans have to live with. But here is the thing. It might not have taken much more for Boston to land the two-time MVP. Maybe it came down to one name: Hugo Gonzalez.
Let me back up. The Celtics were serious about trading for Giannis. Like, put-Jaylen-Brown-on-the-table serious. Brown was coming off an All-NBA Second Team season. That is a legit asset. Boston offered Brown and two first-round picks to Milwaukee, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Solid offer. Not enough.
Miami sent out Tyler Herro, three recent first-rounders in Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, and Kasparas Jakucionis, plus three future firsts (2026, 2031, 2033), a pick swap in 2030, and a second-rounder in 2033. That package dwarfed Boston’s. But here is where it gets interesting.
Bill Simmons, an NBA insider and a loud-and-proud Celtics homer, tweeted during the trade frenzy that he would be “shocked” if Boston included Gonzalez in any Giannis deal. Gonzalez is a young guy on the bench. Not a star. Not even a rotation lock yet. But the Celtics held him back. And according to multiple reports, Boston did exactly that — they kept Gonzalez out of the final offer.
Was he the deal-breaker? We don’t know for sure. But the fact that Milwaukee picked Miami’s offer over a package featuring an All-NBA guard, a couple of picks, and no Gonzalez suggests maybe the Bucks wanted that extra young piece. Or maybe they just liked the Heat’s haul better. Either way, it stings for Celtics fans who now have to watch Giannis in a Heat jersey.
Look, it is not all doom and gloom in Boston. The Celtics won 56 games last season. And that was with Jayson Tatum missing most of the year while recovering from a ruptured Achilles. Tatum is back. Brown is still on the roster (assuming the trade talks didn’t mess up their relationship, which is a real question). This team is close to contending without Giannis.
Missing out on a talent like Antetokounmpo hurts. No question. But unlike Miami, Boston did not need him just to be relevant. The Celtics were already in the mix. They just could not close the gap.
And maybe a guy named Hugo Gonzalez is why.
Milwaukee walked away happy. Miami got their superstar. Boston got a lesson in how thin the margin is between getting the deal done and watching someone else land the franchise player.
