Grady Emerson just did something that seemed impossible a few months ago. The high school shortstop from Fort Worth Christian passed Roch Cholowsky for the No. 1 spot in MLB Pipeline’s updated 2026 Draft Top 250. And it’s not because Cholowsky stumbled.
Cholowsky entered the 2026 season as the clear favorite to go first overall. That kind of preseason lock status is rare. You have to go back to Adley Rutschman in 2019 to find a prospect who carried that label into a draft year. And Cholowsky delivered. He led UCLA to the No. 1 ranking from the preseason all the way through the conference tournament. He won Big Ten Player of the Year for the second straight season. MLB Pipeline actually bumped his defensive grade from 60 to 65 in the latest update. He’s a plus hitter with power and evaluators call him the best all-around college shortstop since Troy Tulowitzki, which is about 20 years of territory.
So what gives?
According to Jim Callis of MLB.com, the shift happened because enough scouts believe Emerson has the highest ceiling in the entire class. MLB Pipeline reports that most teams view Emerson as having more upside than any other player available. He’s also widely considered the best pure hitter in the draft, regardless of whether you’re looking at high school or college guys. He won Gatorade National High School Baseball Player of the Year for a reason.
The context matters here. When Cholowsky graduated from Hamilton High School in 2023, he was a first-round talent but nobody talked about him going first overall. That class was loaded with prep shortstops and he was just one of several. Emerson enters this draft with legitimate top-pick buzz. That’s a different kind of pressure and a different kind of projection.
What This Means for July 11
Even with Emerson sitting atop the MLB Pipeline rankings, Cholowsky is still the slight betting favorite to hear his name called first by the Chicago White Sox on July 11. According to league sources, some people inside the White Sox organization might prefer Emerson’s long-term upside. But the general belief around the league is that Cholowsky’s path to the majors is shorter and the gap between the two is narrow enough that it comes down to preference rather than a clear talent gap.
The draft’s first round starts Saturday, July 11 at 1 p.m. ET. Rounds 5 through 20 follow on Sunday. Two elite shortstops. One top pick. This one might stay close until the very last minute.
