Erling Haaland did it again. And this time, he sent Brazil home from the World Cup.
The Manchester City striker scored twice in the second half on Sunday to lift Norway to a stunning 2-1 win over Brazil in the Round of 16. It wasn’t just the result that shocked everyone. It was how it happened.
For most of the first half, Haaland was basically invisible. Norway sat deep and Brazil controlled possession. Vinícius Jr. had his moments. Raphinha looked dangerous. The game felt like it was following a script that ended with the five-time champions moving on.
Then the second half started and Haaland remembered he’s Erling Haaland.
He nodded home the opener in the 63rd minute, muscling past Marquinhos to get on the end of a cross. Ten minutes later he stepped into a shot from outside the box that curled past Alisson like it had GPS on it. Game over. Norway 2, Brazil 1. Quarterfinal bound.
After the match, Vinícius was asked about the guy who just ended his country’s tournament. He didn’t dodge the question or give some diplomatic non-answer. He kept it simple.
“We can only congratulate Haaland and Norway,” Vinícius said. “Congrats to them.”
It was a classy response from a guy who had just watched his World Cup dreams get crushed. And honestly, what else is there to say? Haaland was quiet for 60 minutes but still found a way to win. That’s what the best players do.
Brazil hasn’t won the World Cup since 2002. This was supposed to be the year they ended that drought. They had the talent. They had the depth. They had Vinícius playing at an MVP level for Real Madrid all season. But they ran into a one-man wrecking crew from Norway who doesn’t care about your history or your reputation.
Norway now moves on to face either Spain or Switzerland in the quarterfinals. And with Haaland in this kind of form, you’d be crazy to count them out.
As for Brazil, it’s back to the drawing board. Another tournament, another early exit. The questions about pressure and expectations will follow them for the next four years. But in that moment, in the tunnel after the game, Vinícius did the right thing. He gave credit where it was due.
Some guys would’ve sulked. He just tipped his cap.
