MIAMI — Giannis Antetokounmpo did not try to sound bulletproof at his introductory press conference on Thursday. He did the opposite. He told Pat Riley he was scared.
The moment came during a phone call between the two after the blockbuster trade that sent Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. from Milwaukee to Miami. The 31-year-old forward, who spent 13 seasons with the Bucks, admitted he needed closure before he could fully move on.
“I was like, ‘I know you guys think I’m this big tough beast,’” Antetokounmpo said. “But at the end of the day, I’m human. I have my emotions, and I was like, ‘I’m scared. This is different.’”
He said the conversation with Riley gave him exactly what he needed. Permission to feel the weight of leaving the only NBA franchise he had ever known. A chance to say out loud that the endless trade rumors had worn him down. It was “tiring,” he said.
A surreal shift from Milwaukee to Miami
Antetokounmpo had always figured Milwaukee would be his home for life. He won an MVP there. Two of them. He brought the city a championship. “I felt and heard the conviction in his voice about the same things that I wanted, that Spo wants, that the Arison family wants,” Riley said. “He just talked about winning. It was business right on that phone call, and he wants to win big.”
Riley added a quick qualifier — “We’re not here guaranteeing anything” — but the message was clear. This is Miami. Winning is not a hope. It is the expectation.
Antetokounmpo remembered stalking Riley’s office as a kid
The press conference had its lighter moments too. Antetokounmpo recalled a practice years ago when he was still with the Bucks and the team was in Miami. He wandered over to Riley’s office, just to see what the legend was all about.
“I was snooping around to kind of see what the great Pat Riley was about,” he said, smiling. “His office is right there next to the court.”
Now he shares that building. That expectation. That weight. And he told Riley he would do whatever it takes to honor the Heat’s history and culture.
“I’m going to work hard,” Antetokounmpo said. “And hopefully I can leave a mark here.”
Riley, for his part, is not done yet. He hinted at more moves to come — specifically a waiting game for LeBron James — making it clear Miami sees this as a championship window that needs to be pried wide open right now.
“We landed the plane,” Riley said. “Now there’s another one we have to land.”
The work of building around Antetokounmpo is just beginning. But for one afternoon, the conversation was honest. A 10-time All-Star stood in front of cameras, admitted he was nervous, and let the franchise know he was all in anyway.
