Giannis to Boston, Kawhi to Miami? Bill Simmons’ Four-Team Trade Blueprint Has a Wild Twist

The NBA rumor mill is already churning for the 2026 offseason, and one proposal making the rounds involves a four-team shakeup that could redefine the Eastern Conference. Bill Simmons, the longtime NBA analyst and podcaster, floated a scenario during a recent show that ties together Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Boston Celtics, a disgruntled Kawhi Leonard, and a Clippers team sitting on a lottery pick.

Here’s the gist: The Milwaukee Bucks finally move on from their two-time MVP, sending Giannis to the Celtics. But instead of taking back Jaylen Brown — last season’s Finals MVP — the Bucks use the Los Angeles Clippers as a third-party facilitator. The Clippers, armed with the No. 5 pick in what scouts consider a deep draft class, would receive Brown. Then, as a secondary piece, Los Angeles ships Kawhi Leonard to the Miami Heat.

“Could the Clipps, with the fifth pick, move in there and be the third team?” Simmons asked during his show. “And then, the second piece of this, would they send Kawhi to Miami as a consolation prize?”

The logic, according to Simmons, is that Milwaukee would rather stockpile draft capital than take on a veteran max contract like Brown’s. The 2026 draft class is loaded with high-end prospects, and the No. 5 pick could land the Bucks a cornerstone piece for their rebuild. For Boston, swapping Brown for Antetokounmpo would create an all-time duo alongside Jayson Tatum — one that pairs elite defense and rim pressure with Tatum’s perimeter scoring.

Why the Clippers Say Yes

The Clippers are stuck in an awkward place. Kawhi Leonard is still elite when healthy, but he’s missed significant time in three of the last four seasons. Moving him off the books while picking up a 28-year-old Brown — who looked like a true No. 1 option this season with Tatum sidelined for much of the year — would give LA a younger, more durable star. Adding the fifth pick to their core would also give them flexibility to either draft a prospect or flip the selection for another piece.

Brown’s game has evolved. He’s become a reliable playmaker and a suffocating defender, and his playoff résumé includes a Finals MVP trophy from 2024. In a Clippers system, he could shoulder the scoring load without the pressure of being the face of a championship-or-bust franchise.

Miami’s Consolation Prize

The Heat have long been linked to Giannis as a preferred landing spot, but Kawhi Leonard isn’t a bad fallback. Leonard’s two-way game — specifically his on-ball defense and mid-range efficiency — fits the Heat’s culture of toughness and discipline. He’d slot in as the Jimmy Butler replacement Miami has been chasing since Butler’s departure.

“He’d serve as the Jimmy Butler replacement that the team has looked for since his departure,” one fan account noted after Simmons’ comments spread online.

Miami would likely need to send salary back, possibly in the form of Tyler Herro or Duncan Robinson, though the exact trade math remains unclear. The team has not confirmed any interest in Leonard, but the fit is obvious: a versatile wing who can create his own shot and lock down opponents in the playoffs.

The Repercussions

If this deal goes through, the East would look radically different. Boston would become an immediate favorite, pairing Antetokounmpo and Tatum with a supporting cast of Derrick White, Jrue Holiday (if retained), and Kristaps Porziņģis. Milwaukee would reset around a young core, with Giannis’s departure signaling the end of an era that included a title in 2021.

For the Clippers, the gamble is that Brown’s prime aligns with their timeline better than Leonard’s. For Miami, Kawhi might be the missing piece — if his knees hold up.

As of now, none of the four teams have commented on the proposal. But in the NBA offseason, where smoke often precedes fire, this four-team dance is at least worth watching.
