Giannis Needed 12 Hours of Sleep to Prepare for Bam. Now They’re Teammates.

The Miami Heat introduced Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. on Thursday afternoon, and within minutes it was clear that the two-time MVP had been studying his new teammate a lot longer than anyone realized.

Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo have spent years beating on each other in the Eastern Conference. The Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat have met in the playoffs multiple times. Those matchups between two elite big men were must-see TV. But what Antetokounmpo said Thursday put that rivalry into a different light.

According to Antetokounmpo, he didn’t just game-plan for Adebayo. He slept for it.

“Usually I get eight hours of sleep before I play anybody,” Antetokounmpo told reporters. “With Bam, I got 12 hours of sleep. I had to be extra ready because I know he’ll go. He’ll play very, very hard. He’s very, very competitive, and he’ll do whatever he can to win the game. I think a lot of people around the league are that way, but not everybody. But if you can in the percentile, probably Bam is 99.9 percent.”

That kind of respect doesn’t come easy. Adebayo has built a reputation as one of the league’s toughest defenders and most relentless competitors. Antetokounmpo needed four extra hours of rest just to match that energy. Now they’re on the same side.

The Heat traded away Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis to get this deal done. Throw in three first-round picks (2026, 2031, 2023), a pick swap, and a 2033 second-rounder. The 2026 pick turned into Tennessee’s Nate Ament. That’s a lot of future capital. But for a guy like Antetokounmpo, you pay the price.

A new defensive identity in Miami

Antetokounmpo and Adebapo give the Heat something they haven’t had since the LeBron-CBosh-Wade years: two legitimate two-way stars who can dominate on defense alone. Both have been Defensive Player of the Year finalists. Both can guard multiple positions. And Antetokounmpo made it clear that the standard starts with them.

“Defensively, we have to be good. We have to. We have no choice, you know, not to be good,” Antetokounmpo said. “It starts from me and Bam, and I’m excited. I’m excited to compete with him. I’m excited to be on the same side with him.”

He talked about Adebayo’s personality too, saying he’s funnier and quieter than he expected. They worked together during a trip to Las Vegas, and Antetokounmpo came away impressed by Adebayo as a person, not just a player.

“I think when the two heads of the snakes are very competitive, they work hard, they’re very disciplined, I think everybody else is gonna follow our lead,” he said.

The big question hanging over all of this is LeBron James. He’s the top free agent on the market and Miami is linked to him the way it always is. But even without LeBron, the Heat just added a two-time MVP to a roster that already had a two-time All-Star center and a Coach of the Year in Erik Spoelstra. Miami went 43-39 last season and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019. That feels like a long time ago now.
