Giannis Is a Heat Player Now. What Happens to His Brother Thanasis?

The Giannis Antetokounmpo era in Milwaukee is officially over. Late Monday night, the Bucks agreed to send the two-time MVP and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster deal that reshapes the Eastern Conference. Miami gave up Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three future first-round picks (2026, 2031, 2033), a pick swap in 2030, and a 2033 second-rounder. That’s a lot of assets for a guy who made it clear he wasn’t happy in Wisconsin.

Giannis had been dropping hints for months. He wasn’t subtle about it. The Bucks knew they couldn’t let him walk for nothing, so they pulled the trigger right before the 2026 NBA Draft. Whether Miami is now a real contender depends on how quickly everyone gels, but the Heat just added the kind of superstar who can carry a franchise.

But here’s a question that’s been floating around: what happens to Thanasis? Giannis’s older brother has been a fixture in Milwaukee for six of the last seven seasons. He missed the 2024-25 campaign with an injury, but the Bucks kept him around. Some people around the league have always viewed Thanasis’s roster spot as a favor to Giannis. A way to keep the star happy. That’s not an opinion the franchise ever confirmed publicly, but it wasn’t exactly a secret.

Thanasis Is a Free Agent Right Now

His one-year deal with the Bucks expired after this past season. So he’s not heading to Miami as part of the trade package. He’s a free agent. Technically still on Milwaukee’s books as a cap hit for now, but that’s just paperwork. The real question is whether the Heat will want him.

Miami just traded away a lot of depth. Herro is gone. Ware is gone. Jaquez is gone. That leaves some open roster spots on the Heat’s bench. If Pat Riley is looking to fill those spots cheaply, bringing in a veteran who knows Giannis’s game and doesn’t need the ball could make sense. Thanasis isn’t going to blow anyone away with his scoring, but he’s a high-energy defender and a positive locker room presence.

There’s also the matter of Alex Antetokounmpo, the youngest brother. Milwaukee called him up late last season when their playoff hopes were already dead. It felt like a nice gesture more than a basketball move. If the Heat want to go full Antetokounmpo family reunion, they could sign both Thanasis and Alex. But that’s speculation. The team hasn’t said anything yet.

Here’s what we know for sure: Giannis is in Miami. Thanasis is available. And the Heat just lost a bunch of rotation players. It’s not hard to connect those dots. But it’s also not a done deal. Some teams might look at the Antetokounmpo brothers as a package and decide they’d rather just have the superstar. That’s a decision for Miami’s front office.

For now, Thanasis waits. Like a lot of free agents at this time of year, he’s hoping for a phone call. But in his case, the call might come with a familiar voice on the other end.
