Giannis Antetokounmpo’s camp reportedly gave Boston the same green light as Miami

The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumor mill has been a two-team race for weeks now. Miami and Boston. That’s it. But a new detail from a reporter close to the situation suggests the gap between those two destinations might be smaller than people think.

Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald asked a Giannis associate a straightforward question: why not just tell Milwaukee that Miami is the only place you’ll go? The answer was revealing. According to Jackson, the associate said Antetokounmpo “would be OK” with Boston too.

That changes the calculus a bit. If Giannis is willing to play for either franchise, the Bucks don’t have to funnel a deal through one specific team. They can pit the Heat and Celtics against each other and drive up the return. That’s leverage Milwaukee didn’t have if Antetokounmpo was dead set on South Beach.

How the Giannis sweepstakes got here

The Bucks have been circling the drain for a while now. A first-round playoff exit. A roster that looks older and clunkier by the month. Giannis is approaching 30 and has one ring. The clock is ticking.

Miami made sense from the start. Warm weather. Pat Riley’s culture. A franchise that consistently finds talent in the bargain bin and turns it into something dangerous. But Boston has the better roster right now. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are still in their primes. The Celtics just won a title. That matters.

Jackson also reported that Giannis’s camp made it clear to at least one team out west that he wouldn’t sign an extension there. That effectively killed that team’s interest before it even started. But Boston never got that cold shoulder. And now we know why.

The Heat still have the inside track. Giannis has wanted Miami for years and that hasn’t changed. But Boston is a real option. Not a second choice. A legitimate co-finalist.

What does this mean for the actual trade? It probably means the Bucks wait. They let both teams sweat. They ask for Jaylen Brown or Bam Adebayo. They ask for picks. They ask for everything. And if one side blinks, Giannis goes there. If neither blinks, things get weird.

One thing is clear. The idea that Giannis would only accept a trade to Miami is dead. Boston is in the room. And the Bucks are holding the cards.
