Gary Neville is usually not the type to throw out a transfer name just to fill air. But during ITV’s World Cup coverage, the former Manchester United defender made a pretty direct case for Felix Nmecha. And honestly, the timing makes sense.
United is hunting for midfield help this summer. Casemiro is gone. They’ve already locked down Atalanta’s Ederson, which is a solid start. But the club wants at least one more body in the middle of the park. Their top target? Mateus Fernandes from West Ham. Problem is, West Ham wants £85 million for him. That’s steep, even by United standards.
So Neville pointed at Dortmund’s Nmecha, who is currently balling out at the World Cup in Germany’s midfield. The 25-year-old had a monster opener against Curacao — one goal, complete control of the game, a 7-1 win. Against Ivory Coast on Saturday, he didn’t score but still put up a 91% pass completion rate, created two big chances, and racked up eight tackles. The guy works.
What the pundits are saying
Neville didn’t hold back. “He looked outstanding the other night,” Neville said. “It looked like he had absolutely everything.” But he also noted the obvious risk: “The more he plays like that, the more expensive he’ll get.”
Arsenal legend Ian Wright jumped in too, pointing out that Nmecha can play as an 8 or a 10, breaks defensive lines, and gets into the box. “You can see why teams are interested in him. He’s got everything,” Wright said.
Even Duncan Ferguson — not exactly a guy known for deep tactical takes — chimed in. “He’s athletic, he’s got a good right foot, he can defend, he’s a good size. You can see why people are after him.”
The catch
Here’s where it gets messy. Nmecha is under contract at Dortmund until 2030. That’s a long time. His €70 million release clause doesn’t kick in until next summer, which means Dortmund has no reason to sell cheap this window. And even if United came with a big offer, Real Madrid is reportedly sniffing around too. Good luck winning a bidding war with them.
Nmecha put up five goals and three assists in 42 appearances for BVB last season. Solid numbers, not flashy. But his World Cup performances are turning heads. And United fans watching him boss the midfield against Ivory Coast probably started imagining him in a red shirt pretty quickly.
Whether United actually pulls the trigger is another question. They’d have to pay a premium, convince Dortmund to negotiate, and maybe outmaneuver Real Madrid. That’s a lot of moving parts. But Neville made his point. And it’s not a bad one.
