Garrett Stubbs is back. The Phillies had to send someone down to make it happen.

The Philadelphia Phillies got their backup catcher back Tuesday, and the guy who filled in for a week is headed back to Triple-A.

Garrett Stubbs was activated from the 10-day injured list before the second game of the series in Miami. Left wrist inflammation had kept him out since July 18. To clear a spot on the 26-man roster, the Phillies optioned Payton Henry back to Lehigh Valley.

Henry never actually played in a game for the big league club. He had his contract selected on July 24 after Rafael Marchan went on the IL with patellar tendinitis in his left knee. Henry warmed the bench for a few days and now he’s back in the minors.

The move was simple enough. Stubbs gives the Phillies a veteran presence behind the plate who knows the pitching staff. He’s been around for years handling the rotation. Manager Rob Thomson immediately put him in the lineup Tuesday night, catching Aaron Nola. That gives J.T. Realmuto a reliable rest day option without much drop-off defensively.

A transaction that didn’t fix the hitting problem

The roster shuffle didn’t help the offense any. The Phillies managed only four hits against Sandy Alcantara, who threw seven scoreless innings. Miami won 1-0. Nola gave up one run over 5 2/3 innings and it was enough to lose. Kyle Stowers hit a solo homer in the first and that was it.

Philadelphia dropped to 57-51 with the loss. They’re six games back of Atlanta in the NL East. Since the All-Star break, they’re 3-8. The bats have gone cold at exactly the wrong time.

The trade deadline is Monday. The front office is feeling the pressure to do something. Everyone knows it. The lineup is struggling and the bullpen could use another arm. This isn’t news to Dave Dombrowski.

As for the catching situation, Stubbs is healthy now and Henry goes back to Lehigh Valley where he’ll wait for the next call. Marchan is still on the IL too. So the depth is there even if the runs aren’t.
