Garrett Crochet Responds to Red Sox CEO’s Trade Deadline Comments — and He’s Not Happy

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet didn’t hold back when asked about CEO Sam Kennedy’s recent comments suggesting the team might sell at the trade deadline. Speaking with reporters Friday, Crochet made it clear he believes the clubhouse already knows what’s at stake.

“I don’t think that we needed that wake-up call,” Crochet said. “I think everyone knows the kind of ball that needs to be played, not only at the big-league level but here in Boston especially.”

Kennedy appeared on WEEI earlier this week and hinted that Boston could offload players before the July 30 deadline. With the Red Sox sitting dead last in the American League East at 27–39, names like Aroldis Chapman and Jarren Duran have surfaced in trade rumors, according to multiple reports.

Why Crochet’s Reaction Matters

Crochet, acquired this offseason in a blockbuster trade from the Chicago White Sox, was brought in as a game-changing arm. But the results haven’t matched expectations. He pointed to the team’s offseason moves as evidence that the front office and players believed this roster could compete.

“We went out this offseason and acquired some talent that the team viewed as game-changers, the clubhouse viewed as game-changers,” Crochet said. “And ultimately we just haven’t played well as a group.”

The left-hander acknowledged the frustration of losing, even when the games are competitive. “There have been moments here and there,” he said. “Not all the losses are ugly, but they’re still losses, which sucks.”

Can Boston Turn It Around?

The math isn’t impossible. The trade deadline is still about six weeks away, leaving room for a turnaround. But the Red Sox need to start stacking wins soon — and not just against weak opponents. Boston’s pitching staff has struggled with consistency, and the offense has gone cold at critical moments.

If the slide continues, selling off veterans like Chapman, who could bring back a solid prospect haul, may become the logical move. Duran’s name has also come up in trade talks, though the team has not confirmed any active discussions.

Crochet’s comments suggest the clubhouse isn’t giving up — but they also reveal a group that’s tired of hearing external doubts. Whether that frustration translates into wins remains the biggest question for a franchise trying to avoid another long summer in the AL East basement.
