From Four-Star to Five-Star: How Nebraska QB Commit Trae Taylor Jumped to No. 1 in the 2027 Class

Nebraska has been quietly stacking wins on the recruiting trail under Matt Rhule, and the biggest prize might be a quarterback who wasn’t even the top dog in his own class six months ago.

Trae Taylor committed to the Cornhuskers back in May as a four-star recruit and the third-ranked quarterback in the 2027 cycle. That already felt like a solid get for a program trying to rebuild its offensive identity. But over the summer, something shifted.

Taylor went to the Elite 11 finals and walked away as the MVP of the event. Coaches and analysts on site kept saying the same thing — he was the most impressive passer in the building. He won Day 1 MVP. Then he won the whole thing. That kind of back-to-back recognition tends to make rankings people reconsider what they think they know.

And they did.

Rivals dropped its updated Rivals300 on Tuesday, and Taylor is now listed as the No. 1 quarterback in the 2027 class and the No. 14 overall player nationally. Hayes Fawcett broke the news on X. That’s a big jump from No. 60 overall, which is where he sat before the summer circuit started.

What the scouts are saying

Charles Power, Rivals Director of Scouting and Rankings, went into detail on what makes Taylor stand out. He described him as a well-rounded, polished passer with one of the stronger arms in the class. Measured just under 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds with 9.25-inch hands before his senior season, Taylor has the kind of frame that translates well to the next level.

Power noted his whippy release that uncoils quickly and generates fast arm action. He said Taylor added arm strength during the offseason and can drive the football to all areas of the field with noticeable zip. Rips throws to the far hash and up the seam. Tight spiral that cuts through wind. Accuracy in multiple settings. Hyper-trained and consistent as a passer.

That’s the kind of scouting report that gets fans excited and opposing defensive coordinators worried.

Not every service agrees on where Taylor stands just yet. 247Sports already has him as the top quarterback and the No. 8 overall player in the class. ESPN is a little slower to move — they’ve got him as the No. 2 quarterback and No. 41 overall. But the gap is closing fast.

What this means for Nebraska’s 2027 class

Taylor is one of 22 commitments currently in Nebraska’s 2027 class. The group ranks 18th nationally and sixth in the Big Ten, according to the latest team recruiting rankings. Having a five-star quarterback at the top of that class gives the whole thing a different kind of weight. It’s one thing to stack three-star depth. It’s another to have a headliner who could pull in other high-end talent down the stretch.

Rhule has talked about building through the high school ranks since he took the job. Taylor is starting to look like the proof of concept.
