The former San Francisco 49ers linebacker died at age 36, and his friend Amir Shirazi recently shared the quiet, selfless way Smith spent his final hours. According to Shirazi, the two spent part of the day delivering pizzas to a homeless charity in the Bay Area — a gesture that offers a glimpse into the man few people truly knew.

“He was perfectly fine an hour before,” Shirazi told The San Francisco Chronicle, via reporters Matthias Gafni and Noah Furtado. “I came out and he was basically dead in my front seat. I’m just in shock.”

A Sudden, Unanswered Loss

Shirazi and Smith had just returned to Shirazi’s house after making the charity drop. Shirazi went inside briefly, and when he came back, he found Smith slumped over in the passenger seat of his truck. The cause of death has not been confirmed, but Shirazi believes it was from natural causes — and others who knew Smith have echoed that nothing pointed to foul play or substance abuse in his final hours.

NFL reporter Jay Glazer, who worked closely with Smith and knew him personally, was among those who praised the former linebacker as a caring person who often went out of his way to help others. “He was a very sweet, caring, loving giant,” Shirazi added. “If you really knew him, you’d know who he truly is.”
