Felix Nmecha’s Preference Between Man City and Man United Could Shape the Summer Window

Felix Nmecha is reportedly leaning toward a return to Manchester — but he’s not sure which side of the city yet. According to German outlet Bild, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder favors either Manchester City or Manchester United as his next move, and he’s not alone in seeing that as the most likely outcome.

Nmecha came through City’s academy, made three senior appearances for the club, and then left for Wolfsburg in 2021. Two years later he joined Dortmund, where he’s now under contract until 2030. No release clause exists for this summer, but one kicks in at €80 million in 2027 and drops to €70 million the following year. That’s a long way off, but it gives Dortmund some leverage if a club wants him now.

World Cup buzz and a crowded field

The 26-year-old’s performances for Germany at the World Cup this summer have only fueled the speculation. He’s been linked with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich too, and Newcastle United was recently mentioned as a potential suitor. But the report paints City and United as the more attractive options for Nmecha himself.

That makes sense. Both clubs need midfield help. City’s engine room has aged a bit, and United is still sorting out its identity under the new regime. Nmecha fits the modern profile — tall, technical, comfortable in transition — and his experience in the Bundesliga and on the international stage gives him a ready-made resume.

But nothing’s close yet. Dortmund hasn’t indicated it’s ready to sell, and the lack of a release clause for this window means any deal would take serious money and negotiation. Still, if Nmecha’s preference holds, either Manchester club could make a move before the window closes.

What this means for the transfer market

This is one of those stories that looks quiet now but could erupt late in August. Midfielders with Nmecha’s profile don’t hit the market often, and if City or United decides they need him, the bidding could get messy. The fact that he already knows City’s setup might give them an edge, but United’s need for a long-term midfield anchor is arguably more urgent.

For now, it’s a waiting game. Nmecha is under contract, Dortmund is holding, and the summer is still young. But if either Manchester club makes a real push, expect the other to respond. That’s how these things go.
