Former Kansas Jayhawks guard Lagerald Vick has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in Memphis, Tennessee. The charge stems from a shooting on July 4 that left a man hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his back.
Vick was arrested on July 11 and his bail was set at $1.5 million. He’s due in court Monday, July 13, for arraignment with a bail review the next day. The alleged victim told police he got into a verbal argument with another man around 11 p.m. on July 4. When he turned to run after spotting a gun, he was shot in the back. He later identified Vick from a photo lineup and gave police Vick’s first name.

But this isn’t Vick’s only legal trouble. He’s already facing two felonies and a misdemeanor from a separate incident earlier this year involving his ex-girlfriend. Vick allegedly broke into her house and was charged with breaking and entering and theft. His court date for that case is set for July 30.
This also isn’t Vick’s first off-court controversy. Back in 2015, while a freshman at Kansas, he was the subject of a Title IX investigation. He was accused of kicking and punching a female student in the arm multiple times. He wasn’t charged with a crime, but the investigation was opened.
The Quick Rise
Vick was part of Bill Self’s 2018 Final Four team. That season he averaged a career-best 14.1 points per game along with four rebounds and 1.9 assists. He played in 23 games that season, starting 20 of them. He went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft and has since played overseas for teams like the Yulon Luxgen Dinos, Team Cali, and the Southland Sharks.
At 29 years old, Vick’s basketball career is now overshadowed by serious criminal charges. If convicted of attempted first-degree murder, he could face a lengthy prison sentence. The alleged shooting victim survived, which is probably the only good news in this whole mess.
