Erling Haaland Is Rested and Ready. Ivory Coast’s Defense Has a Problem.

The World Cup’s Round of 32 is here, and Tuesday’s matchup between Ivory Coast and Norway at Dallas Stadium has a little bit of everything. Both teams finished second in their groups. Both have reasons to feel confident. But one of them just got their best player back after a full game off, and that changes the math significantly.

Norway’s manager Ståle Solbakken made ten changes in the final group match against France. Ten. They lost 4-1, but that scoreline is almost meaningless. Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard didn’t play a single minute. They watched from the bench, fully rested, while the backups took the loss. That was the plan all along. Now Haaland comes into this knockout match fresh, and he’s already scored back-to-back braces in his first two appearances here. He’s in that kind of form where you just sort of expect it.

Ivory Coast has its own story. They’re coming off a 2-0 win over Curaçao in the group finale, powered by Nicolas Pépé’s two goals. Pépé looks sharp, and he’ll lead the attack alongside Manchester United’s Amad Diallo and teenager Yan Diomande. That’s a fast front three. The question is whether they can get enough service against a Norwegian midfield anchored by Ødegaard’s creativity and Sander Berge’s physicality.

The big news for Ivory Coast is defensive. Wilfried Singo is out with a hamstring injury from the group stage, which hurts. But Evan Ndicka is finally fit after missing the entire group phase. That’s a massive boost. Ndicka and Odilon Kossounou at center back gives them a solid base, but they’ll need to be sharp. Norway’s plan is obvious: Ødegaard pulls strings, finds space, and releases Haaland into the channels. Ivory Coast’s back line will get stretched. That’s the matchup to watch.

Norway does have one real concern. Full-back Julian Ryerson is doubtful with a thigh strain picked up against Senegal. Torbjørn Heggem is also facing a late fitness test. If both are out, Norway’s defensive depth gets thin fast. But with Haaland and Ødegaard on the field, the mentality shifts. Norway doesn’t need to defend for 90 minutes. They just need to create a few chances and let Haaland do what Haaland does.

Ivory Coast has won 14 of their last 19 matches across all competitions. They’re organized. They’re physical. They beat Ecuador 1-0 to open the group, lost a tight 2-1 to Germany, and then handled Curaçao. The momentum is real. But they haven’t faced a player like Haaland in this tournament yet. Nobody has.

This is the kind of knockout game where one moment decides everything. A defensive lapse. A set piece. A pass from Ødegaard that splits two defenders. Ivory Coast has the talent to win this. But Norway has the rested superstar, and in a one-game elimination, that’s a dangerous thing to bet against.

In the UK, BBC One is airing this one live and free. Kickoff is Tuesday at Dallas Stadium.
