Ederson’s Man United Move Hinges on Final Medical Exam Friday

Manchester United’s pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson has reached its most critical stage. The Brazilian underwent his first round of intensive medical testing with the club today, with a final decision expected on Friday, July 10.

The transfer, worth a total of €45 million including bonuses, was agreed in principle last month. United committed to paying €40.5 million up front with another €4.5 million tied to performance incentives. But the deal has always hinged on Ederson passing a medical, something the club couldn’t complete until now because he was busy playing in the 2026 World Cup with Brazil.

World Cup Complicated the Process

Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad has been in camp throughout the tournament, and Ederson got an initial checkup from United doctors while the team was in the United States. Those tests flagged some concerns, and the medical staff told United they needed to dig deeper before signing off.

That’s where things stood until today. Sky Sport Italia and Fabrizio Romano both confirmed that Ederson spent Monday going through the first batch of tests with Manchester United’s medical team.

The next round happens Friday. That’s when United will decide whether to green-light the deal or walk away.

Atalanta Isn’t Sweating It

Atalanta, for their part, seem pretty confident nothing is seriously wrong. They’ve pointed out that if Ederson had a real medical issue, Brazil’s World Cup camp would have sent him home already. He’s been training and playing without restrictions, so the club doesn’t expect Friday to bring bad news.

Ederson is a 25-year-old box-to-box midfielder who’s been key for Atalanta the last two seasons. His physical style and ability to carry the ball through midfield made him a priority target for United, especially after they missed out on other options earlier in the window.

One thing worth noting: the fee here is significant but not record-breaking. €45 million for a player with Ederson’s profile feels like a smart piece of business if he passes. If not, United will have to pivot quickly with the window still open.

Friday will tell us which way this goes.
