Draymond Green is not subtle about what he wants. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Golden State forward has been doing everything he can to recruit LeBron James to the Warriors. And given the stakes, that might be the most predictable news out of the NBA right now.
Charania broke it down on SiriusXM NBA Radio. He made it clear that Green is fully committed to staying in Golden State, but that doesn’t mean he’s done trying to reshape the roster around him. Green wants to retire a Warrior. He’s said it publicly. Privately, he’s working on something bigger.
“I’m sure Draymond is doing everything he can to recruit LeBron James to the Warriors,” Charania said. “I think that is 100 percent what is going on here. Draymond, to my knowledge, is fully committed to going back to Golden State. He said on the record multiple times, he wants to retire a Warrior.”
Green’s own contract situation is still unsettled. He’s expected to return, but on what terms? Charania floated two possibilities: a one-year deal worth around $27 million — similar to his current option — or a smaller number spread across two or three years. Both are reportedly on the table. Neither is a sure thing yet.
Three Teams, One Prize
The LeBron sweepstakes are down to three realistic landing spots, according to multiple reports: the Warriors, the Miami Heat, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. That’s it. Those three. Everyone else is on the outside looking in.
Golden State makes the most sense if you’re looking at pure basketball fit. James has battled the Warriors in four NBA Finals. He knows Stephen Curry. He and Green have built a real friendship over the years. Pairing James with Curry and a healthy supporting cast would give Golden State a legitimate shot at another title run — even if James is 41 years old and entering the twilight of his career.
The Heat have the culture, the coaching, and Miami’s nightlife. The Cavaliers have the homecoming narrative and a young core that just made the playoffs. But Golden State has the rings, the system, and Draymond Green working the phones.
Charania didn’t predict where James ends up. He didn’t pretend to have inside info on LeBron’s thinking. But he did make one thing clear: Green isn’t just hoping. He’s actively trying to make it happen.
Wherever James lands, it’ll be one of the biggest stories of the offseason. And if it’s Golden State, Draymond Green will have earned a commission for his recruiting work.
