Donovan Mitchell Has All the Leverage — and Windhorst Says Don’t Expect an Extension Yet

ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst dropped by ESPN Cleveland this week to talk shop about the Cavaliers and their All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell. And what he had to say wasn’t exactly what Cavs fans might want to hear—but it wasn’t doomsday either.

Windhorst laid out a blunt reality check: Mitchell is sitting in one of the best contract positions of any player in the league right now. He has one year left on his current deal, plus a player option for the following season. That means he can afford to wait. And according to Windhorst, that’s exactly what’s likely to happen.

“I think the Cavs and Donovan are in a very good place,” Windhorst said. “And I think everybody should be prepared for the eventuality that he does not extend. He is in maximum control, maximum benefit, maximum choice, maximum leverage situation.”

The Cavs just wrapped up a season that saw them reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018. That run ended in a sweep at the hands of the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks, but the progress was real. Still, when a superstar guard with Mitchell’s pedigree enters the final stretch of his contract, the clock starts ticking loud.

Windhorst explained that next summer—not this one—is the more logical window for Mitchell to sign a new deal. By then, he’ll qualify as a 10-year veteran, unlocking another tier of financial upside. There’s no real incentive for him to sign early, other than doing the Cavaliers a favor.

“The only incentive that he has to sign right now is to do the Cavs a favor,” Windhorst noted. “If Donovan does not extend, it doesn’t mean that he’s leaving. It doesn’t mean that he’s unhappy. It doesn’t mean that the Cavs should lose sleep. It does mean he’s maximizing his situation.”

That distinction matters. In the NBA rumor ecosystem, a star not signing an extension can set off a panic firestorm. But Windhorst pushed back on that narrative, saying the lack of a deal right now shouldn’t be read as a red flag.

Mitchell has been the centerpiece of Cleveland’s resurgence since arriving from Utah, and the team has built around him with a blend of young talent and veteran contributors. The front office surely wants to lock him up long-term. But Mitchell holds the cards here, and he knows it.

For now, Cavs fans can exhale—just not too deeply. The team has not confirmed any timeline for extension talks, and sources close to the situation suggest both sides are comfortable letting things play out. The smart money says a deal gets done next offseason. But in the NBA, leverage is everything, and right now, Donovan Mitchell has all of it.
