Dodgers Just Made a Trade. It’s Not What Fans Were Hoping For.

The Dodgers have been banged up all year on the mound. Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Shohei Ohtani, Edwin Diaz — the list of guys who’ve missed serious time is basically a small rotation on its own. So when Monday afternoon rolled around and word broke that Los Angeles had made a deal, a lot of people assumed the other shoe was finally dropping. A big arm coming to shore things up.

It wasn’t that.

Instead, the Dodgers picked up reliever Seth Halvorsen from the Rockies. And he’s not joining the big club. He’s headed to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post broke the news on X: “Dodgers are acquiring reliever Seth Halvorsen from the Rockies for 2 players. He is going to AAA.”

Who the Dodgers are giving up hasn’t been announced yet. That’ll come once the deal is officially filed with the league.

Halvorsen, 26, made his MLB debut with Colorado in 2024 and showed off some legit heat. At one point he touched 103.3 mph with his fastball. That kind of velocity doesn’t grow on trees. But he opened 2026 back in Triple-A after the Rockies optioned him, and he’s been there ever since.

This move doesn’t fix the real problem

Look, adding a hard-throwing reliever is never bad depth. But the Dodgers need starters. Or at least more reliable arms in the bullpen that can chew up innings when the rotation falls apart again. Last year’s run to the World Series was bumpy in large part because injuries kept forcing patchwork outings. The same issue is already creeping up this season.

Andrew Friedman and the front office have time before the August 3 deadline to do something bigger. Halvorsen might eventually help at the big league level, but right now he’s insurance stored in the minors. That’s not the kind of move that quiets the noise about an exhausted pitching staff.

The Dodgers are in Philadelphia on Monday night to start a series against the Phillies. That’s a real test against a real contender. And if the rotation gets stretched thin again, fans are going to be a lot louder about wanting more than a Triple-A reliever swap.
