Derek Stingley Jr. already looks like one of the best cornerbacks in football. But apparently, he thinks he can get even better. And that’s a problem for every quarterback who has to throw his way in 2026.
Stingley told Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 that he feels quicker right now than he did at any point last season. He’s not just talking about foot speed either. He mentioned working on his hands, his eyes, and making sure he catches everything that comes near him.
“I feel like I’m a little bit quicker right now,” Stingley said. “I’ve just still got to work on my feet, hands, eyes. Whether that’s beginning of the route, the end of the route, I got to make sure I catch all the ones that come my way.”
The Numbers Already Back Him Up
Stingley earned his first Pro Bowl and All-Pro nod in 2024. That season he put up 54 tackles, 18 pass defenses, and 5 interceptions. All career highs. The Texans rewarded him with a $90 million extension.
Then in 2025 he followed it up with 36 tackles, 15 pass breakups, and 4 picks across all 17 games. Pro Football Focus gave him an overall grade of 69, which ranked 30th among 114 cornerbacks. That’s fine. But his coverage grade of 75.8 ranked 11th in the league. That’s elite.
The Defense Is Already Nasty
Houston’s defense as a whole led the NFL in 2025 allowing just 277.2 yards per game. Their pass defense ranked sixth at 183.5 yards per game. That’s a tough unit already. Stingley is a big reason why.
But the Texans want more. They want to climb higher in those rankings and make a deeper playoff run. That means Stingley needs to stay at this level or maybe even push past it. Based on what he’s saying, he plans to do exactly that.
He’s coming off two of the best seasons any cornerback in the league had. But he’s not satisfied. He’s talking about getting faster and more disciplined. That’s the kind of mindset that turns good players into Hall of Fame candidates.
The AFC South has some talented young quarterbacks. Trevor Lawrence. Anthony Richardson. Will Levis. They all have to face Stingley twice a year. If he really is faster in 2026, those matchups just got a whole lot tougher.
