Darryn Peterson Said Something About Jazz Fans That Kobe Would Have Loved

The Utah Jazz drafted a kid who talks like he’s been in the league for a decade. Darryn Peterson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, sat down with reporters Saturday and basically said what every fan wants to hear but almost never gets. No clichés about hard work and winning championships. Just a straight-up admission about who he’s playing for.

“When I put on the uniform I’m not putting it on for myself, I’m putting it on for the fans,” Peterson said, deadpan, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

That clip went viral. And it didn’t hurt that the moment was captured by the NBA’s official account. But the context matters here. Peterson isn’t just saying pretty words. He’s been open about modeling his mentality after Kobe Bryant — the “Black Mamba” approach, the killer instinct, the refusal to take possessions off. But he’s not wearing Kobe’s numbers. Peterson will wear No. 22 in Utah, the same number he wore at Kansas. That’s his own thing.

What the Jazz saw in him goes beyond the uniform comment though. One Eastern Conference executive, speaking anonymously to ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel, admitted he’d have taken Peterson first overall. Over AJ Dybantsa. That’s a serious take.

“Few guards enter the league with his scoring mentality and killer instincts leading an offense,” the exec told Siegel. “None of the other guards have the same level of comfortability as an isolation scorer. He will be special in Utah, no doubt. It will be tough to stop him.”

Then a Western Conference executive told Siegel the same thing in different words: Utah should be thrilled. Especially because Peterson lands on a team that’s projected to make the playoffs next season. That’s not the usual rebuild script. Most lottery picks join a mess. Peterson joins a team with actual postseason expectations.

“Now he just has extra motivation, and he joins a team we’re projecting to make the playoffs next year,” that exec said.

The Jazz fanbase has been through some quiet seasons lately. The Donovan Mitchell-Rudy Gobert era ended messy. The rebuild has been patient, maybe too patient for some. But Peterson feels like a different kind of get. He’s got the scoring chops, the Kobe-adjacent mindset, and now the right words about playing for the people in the seats.

Expect to see a lot of No. 22 jerseys around Salt Lake City this fall. Peterson already made that happen without playing a single minute.
