Darnell Nurse wants out of Edmonton. That much has been clear for a while. But the defenseman is making things a little complicated.
According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Nurse has handed the Oilers a short list of three teams he’d accept a trade to: the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins. That’s it. No wiggle room, at least for now. LeBrun noted the Oilers may need Nurse to expand that list if they want to get a deal done.
Nurse is 31 years old and carries a $9.25 million cap hit for the next four seasons. That’s a lot of money for a guy coming off a rough year. He scored seven goals and added 17 assists in 2025-26, his lowest offensive output since 2016-17. He also racked up a career-high 104 penalty minutes and finished minus-12, the second-worst plus-minus of his career.
Still, Nurse has a track record. Since 2018-19, he’s hit 30-plus points in seven of eight seasons. Twice he topped 40 points. Four times he scored 10 or more goals. He’s a top-four defenseman who can play big minutes and contribute on both ends when he’s right. That kind of player usually draws interest.
But the combination of the cap hit, the limited trade list and last season’s dip makes this a tricky situation for Edmonton. The Oilers need to shed salary and reshape their defense after a first-round playoff exit in 2026. Moving Nurse would free up money and maybe bring back a useful piece. But you can only negotiate with three teams, and those teams know they have leverage.
Pittsburgh is in a weird spot — trying to stay competitive while also planning for life after Crosby and Malkin. Philly has cap space and is building something, but they might not want to absorb that contract. Boston is always looking for defensemen, but the Bruins have their own cap constraints.
Nurse requested the trade, so the ball is in Edmonton’s court. But with a narrow list and a big number, the Oilers might have to be patient. Or they might have to convince Nurse to open things up.
Either way, this isn’t getting solved overnight.
